Mount Vernon's economic maturity is viewed by Chamber of Commerce president Abbott Noble. Pointing out that 16 new firms opened here in the past 12 months, Mr. Noble saw "a continuing strengthening of business in Mount Vernon." During 1958, the Chamber of Commerce added 45 paid members to its roster, lifting membership to more than 400 firms.

Mr. Noble recalled that in 1956, when he took over the reins of the Chamber, membership had dipped to 53 firms. Mr. Noble, a man self-described las "naturally conservative in my view of the business scene," also predicted that Mount Vernon should see the development of 15 new firms in the coming year. "I will not run counter to the feelings of so many businessmen who are now predicting good things to he said.

"It is generally felt by the heads of industrial and retail firms as well as banking executives that 1958 will be a fine year." Increase in new business in 1958 -as healthy as it was, Mr. Noble pointed slightly retarded by the hangover of that slight recession." The rise in new business will continue, he said. Millions of feet of coiled wire are made into nuts at each plant each year. side the railroad right-of-way. Here is where many of the advances in the art of making fasteners stronger more accurate and faster were developed.

Included are the process for cold heading of bolts which revolutionized the industry, the first coldpunched nut machine, the first automatic, continuous nut tapper. To th' day; research at RB is constantly on the job of improving methods and products and taking advantage of every new improvement in materials. The most modern equipment, however, doesn't always mean the finished product. It takes good people, too. The skill and craftsmanship of the people at RB are the result of years of experience and pride in workmanship.

Many of these people represent the third or even fourth generation of company--and fastener-minded families. Maintaining four modern plants Port Chester, Coraopolis, Rock Falls, Ill. and Los AngelesRB ships fasteners by the millions to all parts of the United States and to all corners of the Free World. Marymount Building New Gymnasium This year's addition to educational plant in the Tarrytowns area will be Marymount College's million-dollar-plus Sports Building, now under construction on the Tarrytown campus, at Marymount Ave. and Neperan Rd.

To be completed next summer, and ready for use by returning students in the fall, the building will contain a regulation gymnasium, an Olympic standard swimming pool, bowling alleys, archery range, posture room and other facities, including a custodian's apartment. Roof and exterior walls are up; niterior partions are new going in. The college has been expanding its facilities at the rate of one project a year on a long range program. Public school building has been taking a breather since the dedication of Sleepy Hollow High School last spring marked completion of the Tarrytowns' $5 million expansion program, which included two primary schools as well as the senior high school, and Irvington's new Elementary School was completed two years ago. Short Respite The respite may be short-lived.

An Irvington committee is studying the next step in meeting enrollment The new grade school is filled to capacity and this year the district had to resume use of the East Irvington School. Overcrowding of the junior-senior high school is inevitable as the high elementary enrollment moves up into the seventh and eighth grades. In the Tarrytowns consolidated district, parents, administrators and school board are dubiously eying the F. R. Pierson School, built in 1897 and the only frame construction still in the system.

Its facilities are so noticeably poorer than those of other local schools that it is only a matter of time before parents begin pressing for its replacement. The Chicago school fire brought a barrage of inquiries from nervous families as to Pierson's fire safety status. Fire Proof Stairs The school has fire-proof stair wells and extra emergency exits added to the original structure; number of classes has been reduced to eliminate use of basement rooms and cut the use of third floor rooms, and the building meets all the state requirements for fire safety. But its age and lack of facilities plus still-g enrollments, will soon force the school board to decide whether to spend money on improving it or to ask voters for a new building.
