Wide Shirts To Prove Spring, Summer Favorite NEW YORK-With women who know best, it's wide skirts.

One reason is that the new Spring dress we keep under wraps now will saunter forth soFlo, ar month or so hence, and a wide skirt is just cooler to wear as we near Summer. Another reason is the fact that after Winter's long round of festivities, those old calories have gone to our well, not to our heads, exactly. And those hips have got to pared down sleek and slim, before you can pour yourself into a sheath. This very fact, and the relief and change from the oh-so-comfortable wide skirt, contribute to the zest and verve you feel when you do wear a slim, slim costume. You swathe your shoulders in a stole of fur or fabric, to accentuate the plumb line below.

You feel all "ausgeputzt," as my Viennese mother used to say. Almost as polished and gala as when you attire. Dark Cotton And to gild the lily, the slinkiest sheath for afternoon-and-after is smartest in a new fabric; new that is, for such sophisticated fare: dark cotton! Black, midnight blue, charcoal, or a mixture of jewel-tone and black that Dior calls "brindlered." Invariably, it's woven, treated, to resist crushing, so it combines the cool moisture-absorption of cotton with some-of the practicability of less porous fibers born in test tubes. Typical is Dior's sheath pictured todav. which looks and feels like Honan, but is a Swiss-loomed cotton called honana.

His gifted confrere, Jacques Fath, on the other hand, hasn't a single sheath in his current collection for Joseph Halpert. His skirts flare. ripple, and whirl. They have bias gores, or wedge-shaped inserts to add fullness; they may be circular, or made with pleats, sharp or unpressed ones, all around. Or, and these are in the majority, they Civic Club Auxiliary Approves Donations DRESSES BLOSSOM OUT as coats are discarded.
