An enjoyable concert was given at the Ridge avenue Methodist church last evening, to a large audience that filled the main room of that structure, The mnsic was under the direct supervision of Prof. Carroll and may be classed among the finest ever rendered by amateurs in the city.

Tbe music furnished by the quartet composed of Messrs. Mascher, Stroh, Sourbeer and Weoer, was particularly fine, and the cornet solos of Prof. Chambers, as well as tne piano solos of Miss Carrie Starr are deserving of special mention. Detective Abe Boat received a dis patch a day or two ago to keep a sharp lookout for a man named James Curtis, who had stolen a silver watch and $15. Is he not happy The Carlisle Sentinel says Julia Strange, tbe colored woman who was murdered in Middletown on Monday night was brought there on Tuesday nigbt and buried Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock.

Her funeral was very largely attended. The school taught by Miss Shiieman, on Second street, and Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Sees, on Chestnut street, were examined by Supt. Foose to-day.

On Monday Miss Edward's room, In the Fager building, and Misses Beatty and Dare's, at Harris' park receive attention. Tbe new comet now visible in the northern skies is likely to disappoint some who anticipated a brilliant celestial visitor.Its present velocity is abont forty miles rx second, but this will be more than doubled as it makes its nearest approach to the sun the second week of next month. Tbe Opera Last The Wilbur Opera company rendered "The Mascotte" in a way last evening that delighted a luge audience. Very many changes have been made, bat tbey were received with loud applause. The gems from "Olivette" weie satisfactorily sung as the company is composed of good material.

Breaking up Illegal Fishing. Last week Fishwarden Williamson took a trip up the York side of the Con. ewago creek and arrested a couple of parues wno were doing illegal fishing. Since then one of the men named Sutton has paid tbe fire and costs, while the other is considering the propriety of allowing his case to go to court. Two more warrants are out for the arrest of persons for setting fish baskets.

appraisement or Property. An appraisement cf the personal property of the late Daniel Sbelienber-ger, was filed yesterday with Register Meetch by the administrator, A.R.Shel-lenberger. This consisted of government bonds, Harrisburg National bank stock and other is returned as valued at $343,000. Beside his personal property Mr. Shelleuberger owned real estate which it ti claimed will place his wealth at about $400,000.

Game or Bass Ball To-morrow. The first game of base ball of the season will be played to-morrow afternoon, between the recently erganized Harris-burgers and theFairviews.Both clubs are composed of good material and an interesting game may be expected. Quite a number of games will be played between tbq horna club and thsso of the surrounding towns duriDg the coming month. The street cars will run to the grounds. A meeting of the club will be held this evening A Brakeman's Horrible Death.

A horrible accident occurred on tbe Pennsylvania railroad near Columbia yesterday. As a freight train passing an overhead bridge at Hellam station, Lewis R. Auilbaugb, a brakeman, who was standing on top of a box car, was struck by it and thrown under the wheels. The train was stopped as soon as possible, and it was found that the gearing of a brake was pinning him to the track. The victim was conscious and directed how tbe brake could be removed from him.

In a terribly mangled condition he was taken to Columbia, where Dr. Craie. assisted bv a Wriirhts. vilie doctor, amputated both legs, one at ira we oiner Deiow toe Knee, ills race and head were also cut and bruised and the breast was injured where the brake had rested on it. Mr.
