Dowling's Star Award Confirmed An official announcement from the headquarters of the European Theater of Operations, U. S. Army, today affirmed the awarding of the Silver Star to 1st Lieut. Sheridan T. Dowling, son of and Mrs.

Dowling, 197 Park Avenue, Harrison. The announcement gives details of Lieut. Dowling's exploits as 1 a forward artillery observer for an infantry battalion when he braved enemy fire to gather valuable information. Still serving overseas, 1st Lieut. Dowling, who also holds the Purple Heart award, is a former stock clerk of the New York Stock Exchange.

He is Fourth. succeeded by David Skinner at the first meeting in 1945, set for next Tuesday. Mr. Skinner will serve the unexpired term of Mr. McCullough next year and is expected to be "the GOP nominee for a full twonext Fall from the City of Rye.

In departing yesterday, Mr. McCullough thanked other members for their friendship and courtesies and invited all -to visit him at Albany, "preferably near payday." He also thanked the staff of the board and newspapermen covering the board meetings. He has served on the board two and a half years. Majority Leader Richard H. expressed the board's best wishes to the retiring member and said he felt sure Westchester would have a "friend in in treatment of special county legislation at Albany, The other swan song was that of Robert B.

Stewart of New Castle, who is not retiring from the board but steps down at the end of the year from the dais to become chairman of the budget committee. This no sacrifice financially, however, as each post pays $1,200 addition to the supervisor's regular salary. Mr. Stewart as' new budget committee chairman will succeed Edward P. Barrett of Bedford.

As the new 1945-1946 chairman, the board is expected to select its present GOP majority leader, Richard H. Levet of White Plains; who in turn is expected to be succeeded as majority leader by William F. Horan of Eastchester, former chief assistant district attorney, The Democrats in the board, numbering only five of members, are expected to redesignate Alex Cooke of Yonkers as minority leader. Chairman Stewart, in his own swan song, thanked the members for cooperation and kindness and wished all a Happy New Year. AID MRS.

Bernstein Hit, Bruised By Car Louis Bernstein, proprietor of Bernstein's Stationery Store, Purchase Street, Rye, was treated at the Hospital for minor abrasions the early this United, morning after he been struck body, by an automobile near his store. Mr. Bernstein. was thrown the road by a car operated by Betty Diamond, 22, of 200. West Street, Harrison, who police said was driving north on Purchase Street at a moderate rate of speed.

Miss Diamond told police that she was nearing Cedar Street when she noticed a stalled car without lights on the wrong side of the roadwaxend she attempted to pass the stalled car and the curb she said she felt something bump into her car. She stopped and found Mr. Bernstein lying in the road. No charges were preferred against Miss Diamond.
