After the game started, our hostess brought a book to the table and proceeded to read while playing cards. Most of the time she was so absorbed in the book she nearly Jbrgot about the card game. After we got home, my husband said she was the rudest woman he ever met that she might just as well have told us to go home early the way she read that book in our faces all evening. He also said if they ever invite us back, he will refuse to go.

Abby, I agree she wasn't very polite, but I can understand how she could have started a book and become so fascinated with it she could hardly wait to get back to it, so I don't hold it against her. Do you agree with my husband that we shouldn't go back there again? I really like this woman. OUTPLAYED IN DETROIT DEAR OUTPLAYED: If you like her, see her on your own time. I agree with your husband. LUCIANO PAVAR0TTI NEW YORK (AP) Music, Luciano Pavarotti said, should have no boundaries.

The terior declared a Manhattan subway station manager and two other people winners of an essay contest on opera. As an experiment, Transit Authority employee Matthew Holland is playing operatic music over the public address system at his subway stop near the Metropolitan Opera. "Why not?" Pavarotti said in Wednesday's Daily News, "In Las Vegas, they play it in the bathrooms. Music should be everywhere." The contest was sponsored by London records. Pavarotti met Holland and the other winners Monday at a Manhattan restaurant The winners received a 20-CD set called "Opera Made Easy" and featuring who else? Pavarotti.

KIM ALEXIS MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (AP) (EDITOR'S NOTE: Deaf Abby is on a two-week vacation. Following is a selection of some of. her favorite past letters from the early 1970s.) DEAR ABBY: I am 39 and Edwin is 40. We've been married for 19 years, and I'm not saying our marriage has been a bed of roses, but then, whose has? About a year ago, Edwin tried to run me down with his car, but I was too quick for him.

Of course he denied it said the brakes didn't hold, but be was lying. A few months ago, Edwin was on the roof fixing a leak, and I was down below turning on the garden hose when he tried to drop a heavy metal toolbox on my head. It missed me by a hair. I Just don't know what he will pull next, Abby. I have heard rumors about him and a neighbor lady whose husband is gone for months at a time working on a ship.

If Edwin wants to be rid of me, why doesn't he say so? "That's not ocean world," said protester Russ Rector, founder of the Dolphin Freedom Foundation. "That's tank and pool world. Ocean world is behind you." He gestured toward the nearly Atlantic. Three years ago, federal officials said the park's dolphins were kept in an undersized pool in over-chlorinated water that made their skin peel. Three dolphins died at Ocean World that year, and a petting pool was closed in late 1990 after the U.S.

Department of Agriculture found it was too small. On Wednesday, Dimples and the other dolphins, seals and sea lions went through their paces, swimming with trainers, leaping into the air to ring bells, and waiting expectantly for fish after each trick. if 1 didn't have nine kids, 1 would leave him tomorrow. SUSPICIOUS DEAR SUSPICIOUS: If you suspect Edwin is trying to get rid of you, beat him to the punch arid get rid'of him. If you can't afford a lawyer, see your local legal aid society.

Better to be suspicious and alive, than the dead "victim" of an "accident." (P.S. If he asks you to go hunting, fishing, boating or mountain climbing with him, don't go.) 9:00 -R Frank for example, in explaining to his father's obsession with saving the wetlands: "I admire him, but I pity him, too. His goals just aren't realistic." The relationship between father and son is strange and underdeveloped. In one scene, they race each other through a terrible-looking TV dinner. Male bonding, of sorts. The scene serves no purpose except to perhaps make you lose your lunch.

Benjamin's direction of John Mattson's screenplay is slow and "Milk Money" seems much, much longer than its 1 10 minutes. As for performances, a hardened and weathered-looking Griffith finally has a role that suits her tiny voice and inane whimpers. As she coos to the males in the movie, she becomes the sterotypical dumb Wonde. Sprinkled here and there are some, playful but questionable scenes. In one, Frank sneaks into his sex education class (the teacher has been called away to a phony telephone call) to demonstrate by drawing on V's body a woman's reproductive organs.

In another, shows up at a school party in her hooker attire and, while dancing with Frank, allows him to slide between her legs while she gyrates above his head. It is uncomfortable to watch at best. The filmmakers manage to squeeze in just about every cliche and stereotype: silly schoolgirls whose only interests are making boys like them; dumb women (especially Anne Heche as the prostitute Betty); prostitutes with hearts of gold. The children are given adult lines that simply strain disbelief. YlilCA PRE SCHOOL PROGRAM and ride into the city to hire a booker.

No surprise the bikes get stolen. A hustler sees them flashing around a plastic bag full of coins, lures them to a garage and tries to take the money at gunpoint in a nearby limo feeding strawberries dipped in chocolate to a client, steps out to thwart the mugging. The youngsters salivate at the sight of her and arrange a deal: They'll give her $100 if she'll strip. She does. Later, as she drops off her earnings to her pimp (who has been stealing from the mob), she sees the boys huddled together in the rain on the street.

So she takes her pimp's car and gives them a ride home. The car breaks down when she gets to Frank's house. Dad agrees to fix the car and Frank gives a place to stay for the night the treehouse. Frank has the fantasy that and Dad should fall in love and marry. What ensues is a series of predictable events with a predictable outcome and a forced subplot involving stolen money and the mob.

By DOLORES BARCLAY APArts Editor Three 12-year-old suburban boys sit in a treehouse musing about life's mysteries. They' drop three objects into a shoe-box time capsule: a photograph of one boy's dead mother, an eyelash curler and a diaphragm. Of the latter, one lad says it's a travel drinking cup. The smallest of the trio, Frank, correctly states its intended purpose. This contradiction of worldliness and naivete contributes to the general mess of "Milk Money," a silly, offensive movie directed by Richard Benjamin and produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.

The story centers on Frank (Michael Patrick Carter), whose mother died in childbirth, his science teacher-ecologist father (Ed Harris), and the prostitute named (Melanie Griffith) who comes into their lives. Frank and his buddies, Kevin (Brian Christopher) and Brad (Adam LaVorgna), obsessed with girls, girls, girls, decide they'd like to see a naked woman.
