11 The mass meeting held on Monday evening at the school house for the pur- rose of instructing the school board to purchase the Friends church property was largely attended. Keller was chairman of the meeting and there was considerable discus-1 sion of the question by patrons and! tax-payers of the school district. The1 price asked for the property was minus $200, which was to be allowed for the expense incurred by the trustees in having plans and specifications, etc. drawn up for the proposed addition on the present -hool property, before the church body made their offer. It was estimated that $1000 wonld be necessary to remodel the building for school purposes.

It would contain two rooms, very nearly of a fcame. size as contemplated addition to the resent school. The majority pres-, ent seemed to feel that the price for the property was somewhat higher; than was warranted. The question was put and a vote of 32 for it and to against it was received. A 2-3 majority was necessary to carry the i point and as no further discussion! whs allowable since the meeting was! called to consider this question only, it was moved to adjourn.

The dehydrating plant, said to be the largest in the world, was completely destroyed, together with the machinery.

The loss of $125,000, is partially covered by insurance. The plant was owned by Joannes Brothers of Los and was under lease to John Hagen, an experienced dehydrating man. The plant employed from 40 to 150 persons at different periods of the year and continued running the year round. The product of the plant this season would have been, it is estimated, worth over $200,000. It is announced that the plant will be rebuilt just as soon as the insurance matters can be adjusted and contracts let.

It is stated that the plant will be as large, if not larger than before, and the most modern equipment will be installed. It will be impossible to have the plant ready to handle any of this season's crop, but the assurance that it will be rebuilt will stimulate ranchers to planting large crops for next year. COSTA MESA, Aug. Clara Maynard and her brother Perry Maynard, entertained the Workers Sunday School class at their home last Saturday evening. The hosts had plenty of games pre-j pared so that after the business affairs were over everybody enjoyed vietrola music and played games until a late hour when they were served to delicious brick ice cream and some good home-made cake which was especially appreciated.

Those! who enjoyed the evening were: and Mrs. Harry Clark, Mr. and Maynard, Misses Pearle Bauman, Alice DeBow, I Clara May Reed. Birdie Buttrum. Perla Best, Alice King, Helen and Lelia Reich, Lois Maine, Messrs.

Ed Bennett, Winifred Whitehead, Geo. Carl May, Arden Long, John1 iSiegle, Arthur Finegan, Clarence jPrinslow, Carl Beltz, and the Clara and Perry Maynard. Dinner Guest at Mrs. Chas. Harmon, who has been visiting at Portland, and is now on her way to her home in San Jose, was a dinner guest of Mr.

and Mrs. J. W. Wherry last Thursday. I Miss Minnie recently received a visit from her brother and family of Minnesota, her sister and family of North Dakota and her nephew' and family of Min-1 nesota.

lowest paid oil workers in Orange county, the roustabouts, will receive a minimum pay of $5.75 a day, and all other workers accordingly for the ensuing year starting September 1, it was announced by local labor delegates ho returned from the wage conferences held in San Francisco for the past several weeks. The increase in wages, it is said, will cost the oil companies $2,000,000 a year, and will affect 15,000 men employed in the oil fields of California. Representatives of the oil workers asked sometime ago for an increase and the conference which ended Saturday wras the result. Oil workers are now among the aristocrats of the labor world, practically on a footing with railroad employes. The granting of this increase will he received with a feeling of relief in the loeal oil fields, as it was feared in some quarters that unless the representatives of the unions and operators reached an agreement that a strike would result which would tie up the industry indefinitely.

The increase in the price of gasoline may have had something to do with the agreement on a new wage scale. BECEIVED IT PLAY PAULARINO, Aug. 11 Mr. and PLACENTIA, Aug, 11. Mrs.

F. Bryan of Taft, have been visiting Mrs wSKX OLINDA OTL FIELDS, Aug In the passing of little Jimmie Monday morning there was brought to an end one of the most cases of intense suffering known here for many a day. The little fellow was hurt while playing and a half years ago and has been an invalid ever since, being unable to walk at all since, and confined to bed for nearly a year. He had been unconscious for several days and the family knew the end was near. He was thirteen years old and the son of Mr.

and Mrs. Hugh Owens of the St. Helens lease. A brother, Sam Owens, is in Oregon. Another brother, Hugh, is in Honolulu, and it will be impossible for them to be present at the funeral.

He leaves besides his parents and absent brothers, one sister, Mary Owens, and two brothers, who are at home. The sympathy of sorrowing friends is with the family in this hour of trouble. The date for the funeral has not yet been set. Mrs. John Martin is spending a few days with friends in Los Angeles.

Attend Oxnard Funeral John Richardson and Miss Mildred Richardson drove to Oxnard last Sunday to attend the funeral -on Monday of Mrs. uncle, Thomas Bell, of that place, who passed away Saturday after a few illness, following a fall. Mrs. Richardson will remain some time with Mrs. Bell.
