CARDEN NOTES 1 Hundreds of Lone Islanders last weekend expressed enthusiastic interest in the latest adjunct of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden the Fanny Dwight Clark Memorial Garden on Willets Roadr Albertson The 12-acre estate was deeded to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden by the late Grenville Clark in honor of his first wife who was an expert horticulturist and amateur ornithologist It was opened to the public for the first time last Saturday Taking part in the ceremony were the daughter Mrs Duncan Spencer of Bedford NY and their on Grenville Clark Jr of Boston North Hempstead Supervisor Robert Meade and Dr George Avery who just retired as director of the Brooklyn institution Three small lakes and connecting brooks as envisioned by the donor have been constructed and are fed by a recirculating water system Some of the proposed plantings already have been made and typical specimens labeled To accommodate slight alter ations were made in the former Clark home Clark wishes his gift to be used as a center for popular-level education about plants as well as an oasis of green for the surrounding built-up community Plans for the Memorial Garden call for courses for adults and children the latter similar to the ones held for years in Brooklyn Classes for adults now scheduled are: Gardening Begins in the Fall Oct 16 Growing House Plants Nov 1 and Floral Fan-tasks and Foliage Regional Lily Group win meet at 2:30 PM Oct 12 in the home of Landahl 667 Union Ave Holtsville Slides of the North American Lily Society will be shown and anyone interested in lilies is welcome The session will be given over to discussion of lily varieties and their culture Telephone 475-5462 if in doubt about location of the Landahl home Giant CelosiaMayBe a Record They were then grown under fluoresoent lights until they could be planted in the garden Mrs Cook has been growing celosla for years but this brilliant red intricately curled flower head of such mammoth proportions has been more than a surprise In fact State University Agricultural and Technical College is interested in dissecting the plant to see if it can determine what triggered its fantastic growth Other vital statistics are a weight of two pounds and a circumference of 1814 inches The cockscomb varieties belonging to the specks ar gen tea share popularity with the feathered or plumed varieties the latter offered under such names as cristata plumosa CL childsL Both types can be dried for winter bouquets and the recent revival of the art following introduction of the borax and yellow commeal method has added to the interest in celosia Also the original plants have been much improved in the past few years another reason why the plants are widely grown Much of the fun in growing annuals from seed is the ever-present possibility of getting something new bigger or better than the parent stock a challenge every gardener enjoys and the fact that amateurs have contributed many novelties to the flower world is proof that these gambles do pay off One of the winners in this kind of lottery Is Mrs Douglas A Cook of Farmingvilk who has a giant crested celoeia measuring seven by seven indies which may well turn out to be of reoord-breaking size One of about 300 cockscombs that germinated there was nothing in its seedling stage according to Mrs Cook to attract attention to the particular plant She used seed she had saved from 1968 plants die likewise had grown herself Some were started indoors in late winter and other seeds were planted outdoors when the ground wanned up in spring Tlie sterile medium of sand and peat moss with some bottom heat was kept in die dark for about eight days until the seedlings popped through NASSAU NEWS CALENDAR Mineola Choral Society voices needed rehearsal 8 PM
