MARKHAM. 1,100 Guests Flee Detroit Hotel Blaze DETROIT iAP) A five- alarm fire which drove some 1,100 guests their rooms in the Statler Hilton Hotel in down town Detroit today was put out within two hours by firemen, eight whom were ovwcome by smoke. No deaths were repwted. The blaze, cause of which was not known immediately, broke out cm the ninth floor of the 15- story hotel.

Fire Chief Glen Thom, who said every piece of available fire equipment was at the scene, said the fire was ccmfined to an elevator shaft and burned be- twewi the ninth and 14th floors. Thom, who estimated damage at $250,000. said the blaze knocked out the power for the elevators and the guests had to walk down to the safety of the lobby while his men had to walk up to the fire scene or get there by ladder. Many of the guests milled about the lobby of the hotel clad in pajamas or robes. Some of them went across the street to a hospitality suite which was opened for them at the Tuller Hotel.

They were served coffee and allowed to wait out the blaze in cwnparative comfort. Tliom said they would be allowed to return to their roimis as soon as the smoke cleared from the hotel.
