Newsmakers By Pentegraph Wire Services LOS ANGELES When Bobby Fischer didn't show up in Reykjavich, Iceland as expected Sunday there was concern he had changed his mind about meeting Russian Boris Spassky in the world chess championship there July 2. But Fischer, in seclusion here, has every intention of playing Spassky, a chess source said today. Like his game, however, the exact time the American champion will make his move is uncertain. Fischer and world chess officials have been at odds over the conditions under which the $125,000 world championship match will be played. seen a similar warning concerning iron tablets, which can be fatal if taken in large quantities.

Recently a beautiful 19-month-old child crawled up on to a chair and took a bottle of iron tablets out of the cupboard. Thinking they were candies, he screwed off the cap and before he could be stopped, swallowed some 50 tablets. He was rushed to the hospital but died 45 minutes later. From iron tablets, Abby? But that child is just as dead as if he had wallowed rat poison. Please, please, warn others.

STILL GRIEVING IN HILLSBOROUGH DEAR STILL GRIEVING: If your letter saves one child, it's well printing. Thank you for warning others." DEAR ABBY: I just boiled when I read the letter from the mother who said, "A man should realize that he doesn't have to stop being a good son in order to be a good husband." I wonder how many married sons are good to their mothers only because their wives insist upon it? I've been married for 1 18 years, and my mother-in-law lives only a few blocks up the street, and I have to beg my husband to drop in and visit her. And he would never call her up and ask her how she is or if she needs anything if I didn't dial the number for him. When it snows, I'm the one who makes him go to his mother's and shovel her sidewalk. And I'm the one who sends him to take off her storm windows and put on the screens even before he does his own.

And I'm the one who always suggests we invite his mother to go out to dinner with us, or for a movie, or a ride. If it were up to my husband, he'd see her Christmas and Mother's Day. I suppose all 1 mothers want to think their sons are perfect. Well, I have news for them. In many cases, the daughterin-law deserves the credit.

If you print this, no name or town, please. My mother-in-law thinks her son is perfect, and I wouldn't want to disillusion her. ONLY A DAUGHTER DEAR ABBY: A woman wrote in saying she didn't want to have anything to do with her husband at night because he came to bed smelling like a brewery. You sure didn't give her much help. You should have told that woman to put a glass of mouthwash by the side of his bed, and also a spitoon.

The reason this world is so messed up is because we can't meet each other half way. CONCERNED Problems? Trust Abby. For a personal reply, write to Abby, Box 69700, Los Angeles, Calif. 90069 and enclose a stamped, addressed envelope. HOUSTON Heart specialist Dr.

Michael DeBakey says today's operation on Kentucky Gov. Wendell Ford for removal of a tumor from an abdominal artery should be standard and not take much more than an hour. The Kentucky governor flew to Houston Sunday to be examined by DeBakey. A Methodist Hospital spokesman said the 47-year old Ford was expected to be in intensive care for about three days and should be dismissed from the hospital by late next week. Ford's tumor an aneuism of the abdominal aorta- was discovered June 15 when the governor was examined for a back injury he sustained during the Governor's Cup Hydroplane Regatta in Owensboro, four days before.

PHILADELPHIA Author Pearl S. Buck, whose "The Good Earth," won both a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Prize in literature, celebrates her 80th birthday today. The only American woman ever to win the Nobel in literature, Miss Buck has turned out a total of 84 books during her writing career. Born in Hillsboro, W. Miss Buck spent most of her first 17 years in China with her missionary parents.

She also served as a Presbyterian missionary herself in China, from 1914 until 1935. "The Good Earth," the story of a Chinese peasant's rise to power, was an offshoot of her Chinese experience. It won the Pulitzer in 1931 and the Nobel seven years later. PRAGUE Cuban Premier Fidel Castro leaves for Moscow on another leg of his nine-country tour today after telling Czechs that North Vietnam needs more support than ever before in the conflict in Southeast Asia. Castro also told a rally Sunday that many of the Nazi war criminals sentenced to hang after World War II ended on the gallows for crimes that he said were similar to actions by Americans in South Vietnam.

Three men mugged Ambassador Zenon G. Rossides and his wife Wednesday night while they were walking through Central Park. Pope Paul happiest with children VATICAN CITY Pope Paul says question recently posed to him by a youth makes him believe youths are close to him.

Speaking to a crowd in St. Peter's Square before his usual Sunday noon blessing, the pontiff said the question asked of him was, "Is it true that you feel lonesome, Holy Father?" The Pope did not disclose what his reply was. The pope says some of his happiest moments are spent with young children. "It is an immense pleasure for us when we are surrounded by these innocent, happy, jubilant, noisy children. We want to take time to occupy ourself a little with such beauty and such joy." Martha calls campaign cops, robbers game NEW YORK (AP) Martha Mitchell says the election campaign "is nothing but a cops and robbers game, and I'm trying to get my husband out of it." The wife of former Atty. Gen. John Mitchell flew in from California Sunday and told the New York Daily News in an interview, "All I want is my husband back." "There is no reason for us to be involved in politics," she told reporter Marcia Kramer in an interview at her two-room suite at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y.

Mrs. Mitchell's husband left the Cabinet to head the Committee to Re-elect the President. She declined to talk about the "dirty things" she knew about politics, but was voluble about her dispute with a security guard that she said led her to leave her Newport Beach, villa. She said the guard yanked the telephone out of her bedroom: "It was a horrible experience. Can you believe that a man can walk into your bedroom, take over, and pull the phone out of the wall?" Mrs.

Mitchell said she left for the East after an incident in which several guards "threw me down on a bed five men did it and stuck a needle in my Central Illinois Wedding BIRKY-McDOWELL HOPEDALE (PNS) Miss Mary Ann Birky of Elgin became the bride of Douglas D. Dear Abby: 4-day-week no treat for wives reader DEAR ABBY: Do you know how this new idea of working a four-day week is going over? Several men where my husband is employed recently went on that four-day workweek and now my husband is considering going on it. I suppose there are some advantages, but I'm not so sure how I would like that setup.

It would mean having my husband around the house an extra day, and in the past some of those long holiday weekends have seemed awfully long to me. I would like to discourage it in a subtle way, of course, but I don't want him to get the wrong idea. Anything you can tell me about it will be appreciated. N. Y.

POST READER DEAR READER: If your husband gets wrong idea, you're in the clear. It's the right idea you don't want him to get. Malcolm F. Forbes (Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine) says the men love the four-day workweek, but their wives aren't so crazy about having their husbands home that much. Malcolm must be reading your mind, lady.

She plans to help Sen. George S. McGovern win the Democratic presidential nomination. "minor league" for "big league" music. The two, Sandra Warfield and James McCracken, were in Chicago prior to an appearance Friday, in Beloit, to benefit the summer festival there. They are wife and husband and sing with the Metropolitan Opera Co. in New York, as well as elsewhere in the United States and Europe. In an interview, both emphasized the importance of development of opportunities for young artists in the smaller cities of the country and of proving quality performances for the residents of these The type of festival being presented in Beloit "may very well be the minor league we've been looking for for the major league" of big orchestras and opera companies, McCracken said, noting that the minor leagues in sports are sources for big league talent.

"It's the kind of thing we in America have to have," he said, adding that it is time to stop importing major talent from Europe and sending Americans to Europe to get started in their musical careers. Fortunes are spent in training musical artists in the United States, McCracken said, and then the only way these artists can make a living is by combining performing with teaching. "So we have teachers teaching teachers teaching teachers," he said. "Somewhere we have to break that." The Beloit Festival this year will be July 21-23, with performances in various The James McCrackens places in that college community. It is described as "culture that isn't formidable.

There are no barriers between artists and audience. You can meet the performers as they mingle and talk with the audience throughout the weekend." This informality, Miss Warfield said, is important so that audiences can come to know performers as human beings. "People somehow think singers are in another world, coming in on a magic carpet," she said. The festival next month will include an evening concert performance, by other artists, of scenes from four operas sung in English, and performances by small classical music groups, dance and mime.
