How much will it cost me to have an architect draw up plans for a house we intend to build? A. That's between you and the architect It can be as much as 10 per cent of the total building costs If he is to draw up the plans, submit them for bids, select the contractor, help you choose materials, assist you to obtain financing and make regular field inspections to be sure the work is being done in accordance with the specifications. But you can reach a lump-sum agreement with him, as many persons do, on the basis of the amount of work he is required to do. Q. I have an old varnished cabinet that I want to paint so that it can be used as a bureau in my small son's room.

Can I paint right over the varnish? A. The cabinet should first be cleaned. There are several ways to do this. One is by wiping it thoroughly with denatured alcohol. After that, lightly sand any shiny areas, as paint will not cling to glossy surfaces.

After sanding, wipe off all grit, then go ahead with the painting. car Abby: Follow your hunch! Don't say anything -f r. 2 XT Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schwelzer of 708 '4 W.

Lindberg. DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have Known a couple for a long time. They have teenaged children and we have always thought they were happily married. Last week when my husband and I 'Self-inflicted strokes' possible for drug abusers were dining out, we saw the wife dining with a very attractive gentleman. We assumed he was a friend and thought nothing more of it.

The next morning this woman came to my home in tears and practically got down on her knees and begged me not to say anything to her husband about being with this man. She said she would break off the affair immediately. I was stunned. When my husband So far, Patel said, the exact nature of the drug abusers' insult was not known. Primarily it could be a single drug and he suspected "speed" or the dosage or the method of administration.

Or it might be, he added, multiple drugs or idiosyncratic reaction or impurities in the injected material or infection or a combination of factors. The original connotation of "stroke," Patel said, was that it resulted from the wrath of God. When you keep that in mind, you see how "over the years, the pattern of cerebrovascular disease has changed according to the nature of the temptations offered by Satan." Before penicillin, syphilis was a leading cause of stroke. Overeating, especially of fatty foods, is blamed for accelerated artery-hardening and this, Patel said, makes "indulged appetite" a foremost cause. "Now, with the explosion of the drug-worshipping culture," he says, a hitherto unidentified vascular disease has emerged on the scene." came home I tola mm what had happened and said I had no attention of telling her husband anything.

My hus band said he was of the opinion that the husband should be told. Abby, we respect your opinion, and sick Just worrying about what this could add up to. Can you explain It? WORRIED DEAR WORRIED: After consulting some experts in genetics I am advised that the color of a baby's eyes and skin frequently are darker when the baby is newborn, so don't -jump to any conclusions prematurely. Also, if TWO grandparents have dark coloring, it is possible to produce dark skinned, dark eyed, dark haired children, even though both parents are fair. However, her father's years in the coal mines cannot possibly affect the color of her child's skin.

DEAR ABBY: I have a friend whose husband brought back some very good-looking purses from Europe, and she gave me one as a gift Whenever I carry it someone is sure to notice and compliment me on it. If this friend is present she jumps in with, "Oh I gave it to her!" I think this is very poor taste. If I want to tell where it came from, that should be my privilege. Please tell me if she is lacking in manners when she does this, and should I mention it to her. WONDERING DEAR WONDERINGi She is proud to have given you something that evokes so many compliments, but it would sound so much better if YOU were to announce it So next time, beat her to it, and you'll have solved your problem.

DEAR ABBY: You told a correspondent that you were sure there were many men who had forgiven an adulterous wife, but weren't prepared to cite name, rank and serial number. I submit one who not only forgave his wife, but he paid to her back: Name: Hosea (husband of Gover). Rank: Servant of the Lord. Serial Number: Book of Hosea, Chapters 1, 2 and 3. J.B.

Aneel N. Patel's term for an apparently new disease of the blood vessels is "self-inflicted stroke" self-inflioted because so far it has appeared only in the more blatant of drug abusers. It was first reported among 14 adolescents who were injecting a variety of drugs, especially methamphetamine or "speed," into their veins. The principal symptom was a systemic, destructive inflammation of blood vessels possibly preliminary to "stroke." Last year it was found among 19 youths who took "speed" and other "uppers" and "downers" by injection. Their initial symptoms suggested "stroke" and coma.

Irregular segments of the larger brain arteries were found to be constricted. A few small ones were blocked. This year it has been found among 17 youths who got their amphetamine from prescription pills liquefied by crushing for injection. Glistening tiny crystals appeared in small blood vessels, particularly in the eyes. One patient died and the autopsy revealed crystals in brain and lungs.

Patel is a neurology specialist at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. He commented on these reports in the medical literature in the journal, "Annals of Internal Medicine." All these illnesses result from "insults" to the vascular system. When an "insult" is repeated and prolonged it may pop a blood vessel in the brain. The result is the catastrophe the layman calls a "stroke." letting the kids become thoroughly familiar with how each moves. One 6-year-old has already played in an under-13-year-old tournament "I give them general principles that get them going," he explains.

"They use basically the same opening all the time, but they are beginning to get some attacking schemes down and occasionally get into some defensive things." The youth lists intelligence and a "very competitive instinct" as major prerequisites for the game. Though an aptitude for math often is not apparent at that age, he adds that the child who plays good chess will be good in math. "I asked for the younger children because I feel they're easier to work with and there's more you can teach someone young," says Schiller. "I've always had the idea of Introducing chess to kids and felt the best place was on the kindergarten leveL "I learned 8t that age and Bobby Fischer did and so did most of the other players I have come in contact with," he continues. "In the United States it may seem early but in the Soviet Union it's normal." Schiller starts out by Introducing the pieces one at a time and want to know what we should do.

MR. AND MRS. DEAR MR. AND MRS. X.s Say nothing.

Either the lady is not playing with a full deck, or she is testing your friendship. Why would a married woman dine with her lover where she's apt to be seen by friends? DEAR ABBY: I am writing to you because I am too embarrassed to ask anyone else and I need advice. A year ago I married a blue-eyed blond girl. She has a very fair complexion and her ancestors are German and Dutch. I also have blond hair, fair complexion and blue eyes.

My people are Danish and Swedish. Three days ago we had our first baby, and it doesn't look anything like either one of us. It has dark eyes, dark skin and dark hair. My wife says it must have inherited her father's dark skin which he acquired from working in the Pennsylvania coal mines most of his life. (Is this possible?) My parents live far away and are begging for a snapshot of our baby, but I am too embarrassed to send one.

I have no reason to mistrust my wife, but I am By Joy Stilley PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y. (AP) -Five-year-olds are perfectly capable of learning to play chess and, In fact, that Is the best age to start them out, says teen-age chess expert Eric Schiller, who serves as a volunteer teacher to kindergarten youngsters. "The earlier they learn to play chess the more beneficial the ability will be," he says. "Chess playing helps develop more logical reasoning processes and helps them to think more clearly and evaluate decisions better." The 17-year-old senior at Schreiber High School here teaches the fundamentals of the game to kindergarteners at the Flower Hill Elementary School. He is a volunteer to HELP (Help Educate Little People), a program that places high school students in an assistant teacher capacity in elementary schools.
