LElWtS TO THE EDITOR Buttons and Boos No Way to Beat LIRR Blues LI Flavor Enriches TV Viewing This point was strikingly brought out when the city stations began removing their microphones after the main speakers had finished and while the the commuters were still speaking The testimony ran into the early hours of the morning and it may be that few viewers stayed up to watch the entire session But to paraphrase a TV commercial it was nice to know that it was all there on Channel 21 for those who wanted to see it WLIW has made a good start' Norman Hosier Jr Garden City Viewers on Long Island had an opportunity to experience something new on Jan 23 The new Lang Island television station WLIW Channel 21 broadcast in its entirety the Long Island Rail Road hearing which had taken place the night before Until then we Long Islanders had to be satisfied with whatever local news the New York City stations could offer as part of their general metropolitan coverage One cannot -imagine any of the New York TV stations devoting 5V4 hours of prime time to this important but load event Merrick Having been employed by news ttwKh and recently returned from military service in Vietnam I thought that I had experienced almost all types of human behavior I was wrong The recent "public hearing concerning operation of the Long Mand Rail Road held at the Garden City Hotel proved to be not a hearing at all but an excellent example of hate and mob anger Dr William Honan defended the Metropolitan Transportation actions in the manner of a thoughtful educated man State Sen Edward Speno (R-East Meadow) put forth specific ami con- 8 tractive proposals to attempt a solution to the ills that plague the railroad The commuters were poorly represented by a mob of adults (by age only not maturity) intent cm the disruption of the hearing through the use of any means available Having visited the campus of San Francisco State University recently I can attest to the fact the tactics of the commuters represented at the hearing were not' unlike those unruly anarchists of the California campus It was evident that the adults at the hearing had no intention of allowing the meeting to progress according to democratic tradition Therefore it is apparent to me that many people are unable to exercise their full rights as citizens competently Per- haps these people are misinformed as to the rights and obligations of a democracy Buttons and signs calling for public hatred catcalls and ridicule are not suggested in file writings and documents that founded this country as a republic "J- The problems of the LIRR are real and require die' serious attention and cooperation of alL That -attention and cooperation are not likely to come from the Long Islanders who believe in loud shouts of hatred end criminal action Peter Restive Pennies for Trainmen Long Beach For those harassed Long Island Rail Road commuters who wish to revolt legally and not was a need for 200 senior housing units There appears to be no need for such housing as there is more than an ample number of apartments at moderate rentals in this community Whether or not a need actually exists is a moot question as this gram will not alleviate this so-called need for housing for senior citizens since the plan as drawn shows that only nine apartments of 87 will be set aside for the elderly The local school facilities are working at their maximum capacity While the sponsor claimed that 75 to 100 children would live at the site the group failed to take note of a federal survey that shows that the average family has 32 children Simple multiplication shows that the 78 apartments would result in a minimum of 250 children Should this project be approved there will be an immediate need either to enlarge the present school facilities or to construct an additional school This will be a tremendous financial burden to an already overtaxed community A Peshkin Responsibilities of Patriotism Glen As a liberal I am outraged at the destruction inflicted upon our society by radicals such as the Students for a Democratic Society and black militants Many people agree that young people should and must have a voice within the framework of educational institutions Nevertheless no voice can be heard or be of any value if radical leftist organizations are allowed to prevail in their present degrees of strength These young people are neither liberal democratic freedomloving or the To love country in the true sense of the word does not mean destroy it It means to assume all our moral and ethical responsibilities in an effort to reform our country property and lead it to a more ethical and moral way of life Doris Anne Brooks The letters to the Editor eohimn will print letters only frem these
