I 1 I v. 1 Texas to a 14-13 upset Saturday of previously unbeaten and fourth-ranked Oklahoma. It was the second consecutive year Gardere had defeated the Sooners on a late touchdown pass. He threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Johnny Walker with 1:33 to play as the Longhorns upset Oklahoma 28-24 last season. The game ended when Oklahoma's R.D Lashar hooked a 47-yard field goal attempt to the left of the upright at the gun as the Texas players went into a wild celebration.

Oklahoma dropped to 5-1 and Texas improved to 3-1. The victory gave Texas a 49-32-4 edge in the 85-year-old series. Gardere took Texas on a 91-yard, 12-play drive, triggered by freshman running back Butch Hadnot's gains of 21 and 16 yards. Greg DeQuassie was flagged for interference to give Texas a first down at the Oklahoma 19 on 3rd-and-8. After three plays gained but three yards, Gardere found Cash in the end zone just inside defender Charles Franks.

Michael Pollak kicked the winning extra point for the Long-horns. Oklahoma's Kale Gundy entered the game to replace starter Steve Collins with 8:38 left in the second period and took the Sooners on a 58-yard drive for a 10-7 halftime lead as Dewell Brewer scored from the 9-yard line with 2:13 left. Lashar's 26-yard field goal upped the Oklahoma lead to 13-7 late in the third period after Reggie Barnes had recovered Phil Brown's fumble. (AP) Reggie Pitchford scored three touchdowns and freshman Duane Jones ran for two more Saturday as Oregon State broke a nine-game losing streak by stunning No. 21 Arizona 35-21 in a Pac-10 game. Redshirt freshman Fred Schweer directed two long second-half scoring drives for the Beavers, who beat the Wildcats for the first time since Arizona joined the Pacific 10 in 1979.

Oregon State was a 21-point underdog. It was the most points for the Beavers in a Pac-10 contest since 1974, when they scored 35 against Oregon in their season finale. Arizona (4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10) blocked two Oregon State punts to set up touchdowns. But the Beavers' defense, which had given up 438 yards per game this season, held the Wildcats' offense in check for most of the game. Oregon State (1-5, 1-1) trailed 21-14 early in the third quarter.

Southern Miss 20 Tulane 14 NEW ORLEANS (AP) Tony Smith returned a punt 63 yards for one touchdown and Brett Favre threw a 23-yard pass to Greg Reed as Southern Mississippi scored 17 points in a 5:33 span of the second half and went on to beat Tulane, 20-14, Saturday night. Jim Taylor kicked field goals of 40 and 47 yards in the fourth quarter to provide the margin of victory. He also missed from 42 yards in the third quarter and 41 yards in the fourth quarter. Southern Mississippi's third victory in a row improved the Golden Eagles to 5-2. Tulane fell to 2-5 after its fourth consecutive loss.

Tulane dominated the first half and Southern Mississippi controlled the second half. Deron Smith threw touchdown passes of 25 yards to Terrance Strickland and 21 yards to Jerry Ursin to give Tulane a 14-0 half-time lead. And the Green Wave missed three first half scoring opportunities when kicker Gary Butler missed field goals wide left from 32 yards in the first quarter, a 28-yarder blocked by Tim Roberts in the second quarter, and low and wide on a 39-yarder with seven seconds left in the first half. er suffered an apparent shoulder separation and was replaced by Scott Hoffman in the second half. 12 Houston. 36 No.20TexasA&M......31 HOUSTON (AP) Chuck Witherspoon scored his second touchdown, a 1-yard dive with 20 seconds remaining, rallying 12th-ranked Houston to a 36-31 victory over 20th-ranked Texas in the Southwest Conference Saturday night. Houston (54 overall, 4-0 SWC) extended its winriing streak to nine games and snapped a string of five straight losses to the Aggies (4-2, 1-1). The Cougars, who fell behind 17-0 in the first quarter, took full advantage of Kenny Perry's interception of a Bucky Richardson pass at the Houston 5-yard line with 5:12 left. No.

1 3 Brigham Young 52 Colorado State 9 PROVO, Utah (AP) Ty Detmer threw four touchdowns passes and set an NCAA record with his 13th consecutive game of at least 300 yards total offense as No. 13 Brigham Young routed Colorado State 52-9 Saturday. Detmer, who was taken out early in the fourth quarter, completed 26 of 38 passes for 316 yards with three interceptions. His total offense streak broke the previous record of 12, set by Jim McMahon of Brigham Young in 1981. Detmer reached 300 yards offense for the 18th time in his career, tying the NCAA record set by Steve Young of BYU.

The Cougars (5-1 and 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference) took a 31-0 lead in the second quarter and coasted the rest of the way. Peter Tuipulotu ran for two touchdowns and gained 63 yards on eight carries. No. 14 Colorado 28 Iowa State 12 BOULDER, Colo. (AP -Darian Hagan shrugged off a shoulder injury and led Colorado to touchdowns on three of four possessions, lifting the 14th-ranked Buffaloes to a 28-12 Big Eight decision over Iowa State on Saturday.

Hagan, who wasn't expected to play because of a sprained left shoulder, came off the bench and produced the go-ahead score at the end of the first half on a 3-yard pass to tight end Sean Brown. He directed scoring drives of 80 and 84 yards in the third quarter, which resulted in Eric Bieniemy's 1-yard TD run and wide receiver Mike Pritchard's 30-yard run on a reverse, as Colorado raised its overall record to 5-1-1 and Big Eight mark to 2-0. Hagan entered the game with six minutes left in the first half after Charles Johnson, who started at quarterback in Hagan's absence, suffered a thigh injury and freshman Vance Joseph was ineffective. No. 16 Southern 37 Stanford 22 STANFORD, Calif.

(AP) -Todd Marinovich threw three touchdown passes and caught another on a razzle-dazzle play Saturday as 16th-ranked Southern Cal rallied from a nine-point deficit and beat Stanford 37-22. Stanford quarterback Jason Palumbis, who led the Cardinal to a shocking upset of then-No. 1 Notre Dame last week, passed for 360 yards to top Marinovich's career-best 338 yards. But USC's offense showed better balance with tailback Mazio Royster nuining for 112 of the Trojans' 153 rushing yards while Stanford managed only four yards rushing. No.

17 Washington 38 No. 19 17 SEATTLE (AP) Quarterback Mark Brunell ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as No. 17 Washington improved its chances of going to the Rose Bowl with a 38-17 Pacific-10 Conference victory over No. 19 Oregon on Saturday. Washington (5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Pac-10) is the only team without a loss in conference play.

Oregon (4-2 and 0-2) was virtually eliminated from the Pac-10 race. Greg Lewis ran for 169 yards, his sixth 100-yard-game this season, and raced 53 yards for the game's first touchdown. Brunell, a sophomore, scored on runs of 5 and 12 yards and passed 45 yards to Orlando McKay for a touchdown in a 17-point fourth quarter against a tired Oregon defense. No. 22 27 Ohio State 27 BLOOMINGTON, Ind.

(AP) -A holding penalty cost Indiana a go-ahead touchdown with less than two minutes to go Saturday, and the 22nd-ranked Hoosiers had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Scott Bonnell and a 27-27 tie with Ohio State. ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) An 8-yard touchdown run by Tico Duckett and John Langeloh's PAT lifted Michigan State to a 28-27 upset of No. 1 Michigan, which lost a late bid for victory when a two-point conversion failed with six seconds remaining on Saturday. Trailing 28-21, the Wolverines, behind the passing of Elvis Grbac, drove 70 yards in 13 plays.

Grbac bit Derrick Alexander with a 7-yard touchdown pass to pull Michigan within one point with six seconds left. On the PAT attempt, Grbac lofted a soft pass to Desmond Howard in the back the end zone. TV replays showed Howard was hit by Michigan State defender Eddie Brown before the pass arrived, but no interference call was made. Despite the contact, Howard was open and appeared to have the ball in his grasp as he landed in the end zone. The ball rolled away and the pass was ruled incomplete.

Howard had brought Michigan back from a 21-14 deficit by returning a kickoff 95 yards for a TD inside the last six minutes. Michigan got the ball back after recovering an onside kick but Grbac's last-ditch pass from the Spartans' 47 was intercepted at the 2-yard-line. It was the first time Michigan (3-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) had been ranked No. 1 since the 1989 preseason poll when the Wolverines lost to Notre Dame 24-19 in the first game. It was the second game this season against a No.

1 team for the Spartans (2-2-1, 1-1) who lost a 20-19 thriller to Notre Dame in their second game. Alexander also caught a 16-' yard TD pass from Grbac and Jar-rod Bunch had a 1-yard TD run for Michigan, playing before 106,188 fans, the third-largest crowd in the history of Michigan Stadium. Dan Enos scored on an 8-yard run for Michigan State and threw a 4-yard scoring strike to Hylarid Hickson. Hickson also had a 26-yard touchdown run for the Spartans. The first half was one of missed opportunities for Michigan despite 126 yards on 17 carries by Jon Vaughn, who entered the game averaging a national-best 168 yards per game.

2 Virginia 31 N.C. State 0 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Moore and Moore, Virginia is looking like a serious contender for the national championship. Shawn Moore threw for three touchdowns, including two to Herman Moore, and ran for another as the second-ranked Cavaliers routed North Carolina State 31-0 Saturday. With top-ranked Michigan losing to Michigan State 28-27 a few hours later, Virginia should move up to No.

1 for the first time in school history when the next Associated Press poll is relased on Monday. The Cavaliers, the nation's scoring leader at 51 points a game, took a 24-0 halftime lead and then coasted to their fifth straight win over N.C. State and 12th consecutive victory at Scott Stadium. "Virginia beat us just about every way you can beat a football team," N.C. State coach Dick Sheridan said.

"We have not been manhandled like this in a while. Virginia is probably the best team we've faced since I came to State." The Cavaliers, off to their best start in 41 years, improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. North Carolina State is 4-3 and 2-3. "There wasn't much I didn't like today," Virginia coach George Welsh said. Shawn Moore completed 11 of 18 passes for 194 yards, including six to Herman Moore for 162 yards.

Virginia's final score came on an 83 yard Moore-to-Moore connection in the fourth quarter. "I didn't think we could do it today," said Shawn, a senior who has passed or run for an ACC-: record 75 TDs in his career. "When we scored 24 points in the first half, I was stumped." 7 Nebraska 69 Missouri 21 LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) Mickey Joseph ran for four touchdowns in the first half and threw for another as No. 7 Nebraska rolled over Missouri 69-21 in the Big Eight Conference. Joseph's TD runs of 15, five, two and three yards in the first half tied a school record for quarterbacks set by Gerry Gdowski last year against Iowa State. Joseph also threw 10 yards to Jon Bostick for a TD.

Nebraska improved to 6-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big Eight, while Missouri dropped to 2-4 and 0-2. The victory extended Nebraska's NCAA record with a 29th consecutive winning season. Coach Tom Osborne elected to start Joseph over Mike Grant after the Grant-led offense sputtered in the first half the past two weeks against Oregon State and Kansas State. Joseph started for the injured Grant in Nebraska's most convincing wins 60-14 over Northern Illinois and 56-0 over Minnesota. Joseph hit four of eight passes and ran for 95 yards on nine carries as the Huskers had 500 yards rushing and 622 in total offense.

Leodis Flowers, who had 111 yards rushing by halftime and did not play in the second half because of a bruised knee, became the first Husker to run for 100 yards or more in four consecutive games since Doug Dubose did it in 1984. Flowers also scored Nebraska's first touchdown on a 1-yard run. No. 8 Notre Dame 57 Air 27 SOUTH BEND, IND. 11 Illinois 34 Purdue 0 CHAMPAIGN, 111. (AP) Quarterback Jason Verduzco threw for two touchdowns in leading llth-ranked Illinois to a 34-0 Big Ten victory over Purdue on Saturday. Verduzco, who completed 21 of 34 passes for 329 yards, hit Kameno Bell from two yards out in the second quarter and David Olson with a 7-yarder in the fourth quarter. Fullback Howard Griffith opened the scoring for Illinois with a 2-yard run in the first quarter and Doug Higgins kicked field goals of 33 yards in the second quarter and 20 yards in the third quarter as Illinois (4-1) improved to 2-0 to share the lead in the Big Ten. Wagner Lester ran five yards in the fourth quarter for the final score as the Mini put the finishing touches on Purdue's fourth loss in five games.

The Boilermakers are 0-2 in the league. Purdue quarterback Eric Hunt- SHAWN MOORE Leads Cavaliers, who could move into No. 1 Gary Steele and 23 yards to Herman Moore in the first half and also scored on a 1-yard sneak. On the final TD pass, Herman Moore caught the ball on his own 35, eluded cornerback Sebastian Savage and raced into the end zone for an 83-yard score with 8: 08 left in the game. The two TD catches boosted Moore's career total to 23, the most in school history.

The 83-yarder was the longest of his career and the longest for Virginia since John Ford caught a 89-yard-er against VMI in 1984. Virginia also was effective on the ground, rushing for 228 yards against the nation's No. 4 defense. Terry Kirby, running behind a veteran offensive line that opened big holes up the middle, led the way with 112 yards on 15 carries. "They wouldn't let us go deep, but it didn't matter because the running game was working today," Shawn Moore said.

N.C. State's defense entered the game with impressive credentials, limiting opponents to 10 points and 96 yards rushing per game. But it was Virginia's defense that stole the show. The Cavaliers held the Wolf-pack to 200 yards, including just 48 on the ground, and gave up less than three yards per play. Virginia sacked N.C.

State quarterback Terry Jordan eight times, including five by sophomore Chris Slade. "We heard so much talk about how great their defense was, we wanted to go out and show we have a good defense, too," Slade said. "If we can shut out a team like N.C. State, it's a great accomplishment." No. 3 Miami ......34 Kansas 0 MIAMI (AP) The Miami Hurricanes traded shoves and punches with Kansas players during warmup drills, then knocked out the Jayhawks 34-0 on Saturday.

A mass of players fought near midfield 30 minutes before the game, and it took coaches of the teams about a minute to break up the brawl. No penalties were assessed, and no one appeared seriously hurt. There were no fights during the game. The third-ranked Hurricanes' defense, which had given up more than 20 points in every game this year, mounted a first-quarter goal-line stand and dominated the rest of the way. Miami (4-1) scored on six consecutive possessions to lead 34-0 late in the third quarter.

Kansas fell to 14-1. With the game coming a week after the Hurricanes' victory over Florida State and a week before a showdown at Notre Dame, Miami looked flat in a scoreless first quarter. But the Hurricanes mounted drives of 55, 69 and 65 yards on their next three possessions to take a 17-0 lead. Miami's Craig Erickson completed 15 of 29 passes for 229 yards and one score, a 9-yarder to Darryl Spencer. Lamar Thomas caught seven passes for 139 yards.

(AP) -Dale Carter's 91-yard return of the second-half kickoff ignited a 28-point third quarter which included a rare touchdown pass by the tight end and No. 5 Tennessee beat No. 9 Florida 45-3 in a Southeastern Conference showdown Saturday night. Carter's return gave Tennessee a 14-3 lead and signalled an abrupt end to what had been a fierce defensive struggle between the Volunteers (4-0-2 overall, 2-0-1 SEC) and Gators (5-1, 3-1).

Florida fumbled on the ensuing possession and the Volunteer offensive avalanche gathered momentum. Tennessee drove 68 yards in 10 plays, taking a 21-3 lead on Tony Thompson's 13-yard run. The offensive outburst reached its pinnacle when tight end Von, Reeves took a handoff from Andy Kelly, faded back and threw a perfect 47-yard touchdown strike to Carl Pickens to make it 28-3 with 4:40 still left in the third period. Florida tried to rally behind reserve quarterback Brian Fox, but he was intercepted on three consecutive possessions. Tennessee's Reggie Ingram returned one 42 yards for a touchdown to give the Vols a 35-3 lead and cap the four-touchdown quarter.

The Vols added their final points on 38-yard field goal by Greg Burke and a short touchdown run by reserve quarterback Sterling Henton. It was Florida's first loss under new coach Steve Spurrier and represented the largest margin of defeat in a 20-game series between the teams since 1916. The previous biggest margin was Tennessee's 40-0 victory in 1944. No. 6 Auburn 56 Vanderbilt 6 AUBURN, Ala.

(AP) Stan White threw two touchdown passes to Greg Taylor and Auburn's special teams scored twice Saturday as the No. 6 Tigers routed Vanderbilt 56-6. Auburn (4-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 Southeastern Conference) built a 42-6 halftime lead and finished with 518 yards, including 301 in the first half. The Commodores (1-4, 1-2) fumbled the opening kickoff and things only got worse. Quarterback Mike Healey, starting in place of the injured Marcus Wilson, was hurt in the second quarter and freshman Jeff Brothers had to finish the game.

Auburn was a much different team than the one that needed a last-second field goal to beat Louisiana Tech 16-14. These Tigers, who had 231 yards rushing and 287 passing, scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters and two more in the third after.
