Southern Cal won Saturday for the first time since last October, getting big fourth-quarter plays from Curtis Conway and Stephon Pace to beat No. 13 Oklahoma 20-10. The Trojans (1-0-1) came into the game winless in their previous seven games. Their last victory was Oct. 12, 1991, when they beat Washington State 34-27.

They lost their final six games and opened this year with a tie against San Diego State. Oklahoma (2-1) had averaged 504 yards and 47 Va points per game, but was throttled by Southern Cal's defense most of the day. The frustration showed in the final seconds, when both benches emptied briefly after an Oklahoma kickoff return on which the Trojans were called for a personal foul. UCLA 17, BYU 10 PROVO, Utah Daron Washington ran for two touchdowns and Marvin Goodwin intercepted a Brigham Young pass in the UCLA end zone with 1:13 to play to preserve a 17-10 win for the No. 15 Bruins.

Cougar reserve quarterback Steve Clements, who replaced starter John Walsh after he separated his shoulder early in the fourth quarter, had driven BYU to a first down at the UCLA 10 before Goodwin made the interception and gave BYU its second straight home loss. Bruin quarterback Rob Walker, a redshirt freshman making his first start, completed 18 of 26 passes for 198 yards as UCLA improved to 2 0 overall. BYU fell to 1-2. UC Davis 48, Santa Clara 44 SANTA CLARA UC Davis quarterback Khari Jones scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with 2:56 remaining in the game to cap a 94-yard drive as the Aggies scored 13 'unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull out a win over Santa Clara. Davis scored touchdowns in 7 of 9 possessions to overcome a 21-0 Santa Clara first quarter lead and defeat the Broncos for the eighth consecutive year. St. Jacques four touchdown throws gave him 59 career touchdown passes breaking the old Santa Clara record of 57 held by Ray Calcagno.

Arizona 14, Oregon St. 14 CORVALLIS, Ore. Mark 01-ford ran four yards for a touchdown, then leaped across the goal line for the 2-point conversion with 1:47 to play to give Oregon State a Pac-10 tie with Arizona. Sam Watson's 38-yard interception return for a touchdown gave Fresno a 21-7 lead before the opening quarter ended. Derek Mahoney kicked a 23-yard field goal and Ron Rivers had a 47-yard touchdown run just two plays after another interception by the Bulldogs. Rivers rushed for 119 yards on just 10 carries. Dilfer had a 55-yard scoring pass to Charlie Jones early in the third quarter and threw a 23-yard touchdown strike to Tydus Winans in the fourth quarter. Fresno State joined the WAC this year after winning three of the last four Big West Conference championships. 36-21 last year, took a 9-0 lead this time when Tommie Smith tackled Grant for a safety in the first quarter and Beno Bryant scored on a 1-yard run in the second period. Nebraska entered the game with the nation's top offense, averaging 559 yards and 49 points. But the Cornhuskers managed only 309 yards and 14 points against Washington's aggressive defense, which converted two fumble recoveries and an interception into 17 points. Hobert, who is now 15-0 as starter, left the game briefly after suffering a pinched nerve early in the second quarter.

Backup Mark Bru-nell, who was the 1991 Rose Bowl MVP before losing his job to Hobert, handed off to Bryant on his TD dive and later directed the 80-yard scoring drive that was capped by Kaufman's scoring run late in the half. But Hobert returned, threw the key TD pass to Kralik and led the Huskies in the second half. He completed 10 of 19 passes for 155 yards, while Brunell was 3 of 3 for 27 yards. Grant completed 11 of 21 for 133 yards and was intercepted twice before an extremely noisy crowd of 73,333, the largest ever for a non-conference Washington home game. Nebraska's talented tailback tandem, Jones and Derek Brown, gained a total of 163 yards, but almost half came on Jones' long touchdown dash.

Washington gained 153 yards rushing, including 57 by Kaufman and 55 by fullback Darius Turner. The Associated Press FRESNO Quarterback Trent Dilfer from Aptos threw three touchdown passes to lead Fresno State to a 52-21 rout of Colorado State in a Western Athletic Conference game, Saturday night. Fresno State in its first-ever WAC game, converted four Colorado State turnovers into touchdowns in the first half to open up a 31-7 lead. Colorado State (0-3, 0-1) took a 7-0 lead on a 42-yard scoring pass from Anthoney Hill to Greg Primus less than minute into the HSWne. Fresno State recovered a Colorado State fumble at the Rams' 47-yard line and five plays later, Lorenzo Neal scored on a 3-yard run to tie the game with 10:33 left in the first quarter.

Another Ram fumble less than three minutes later set up a 37- 1-yard TD run by quarterback Mike Grant in the third quarter, but Travis Hanson kicked two field goals to put the game away for the Huskies (3-0). Washington, which needed a second-half rally to beat Nebraska Continued from Page Bl "They were in it the whole game. At points we aided them but their record doesn't really reflect who they are," said Cardinal linebacker Ron George. In the most decisive offensive possession of the game, Cardinal quarterback Steve Stenstrom drove Stanford 80 yards with 2:19 left in the half for a touchdown. The drive, which was keyed by Glyn Milburn's 26-yard run and culminated in a 9-yard pass from Stenstrom to Jason Armour, made the halftime score 21-10.

Behind the running of Ellery Roberts, who had 65 rushing yards for the game, and the passing of Stenstrom (303 yards) the Cardinal stretched the lead to 35-10 in the third quarter. I Roberts burst over from the line with 3:05 left in the third to make it 28-10. Later, Stenstrom Hit Armour for 32 yards to set up a Milburn 10-yard touchdown run with 2:55 remaining in the third. Milburn led all rushers with 115 5lards on 19 carries. With the help of running back Dennis Lundy (102 yards on 18 carries), the Wildcats started their lte comeback with an 80-yard, 12-play drive, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Chris Gamble, making the score 35-17 with 1:25 left in the third.

George summed up the Cardinal frustration and mood: "We'll have to play a helluva lot better football next week (against San Jose State) if we want to win." Huskers The Associated Press SEATTLE Second-ranked Washington scored two touchdowns in 42 seconds just before halftime and the Huskies capitalized on three Nebraska turnovers to beat the No. 12 Cornhuskers 29-14 Saturday night. The victory extended Washington's winning streak to 17 games and continued Nebraska's drought against top teams. The Cornhuskers have lost 10 consecutive gajnes to teams ranked in the Top Five and eight straight to Top 10 teams. Nebraska closed to 9-7 on a 73-yard touchdown run by Calvin Jones in the second quarter, but Washington struck back with two quick scores to break open the first-ever night game at Husky Stadium.

'After Napoleon Kaufman scored on a 1-yard run with 1:29 left in the half, Washington got the ball right back on an interception by Walter Bailey at the Nebraska 47. Three plays later, Billy Joe Hobert threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Joe Kralik to give the Huskies a 23-7 lead and control of the game. Replays indicated that Kralik may have been out of bounds and may not have held onto the ball as he dove in the back of the end zone, but Nebraska didn't protest the call. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis, meanwhile, continued to have his problems in the 100-meter dash, losing again to Dennis Mitchell.

Bubka soared to his 32nd world record at the Toto International track and field meet, easily clearing the record height on his first attempt. He broke the record of 20-1 he set at Padua, Italy, Aug. 30. Bubka has raised the world record by fractions of an inch on each of his last eight record-setting performances, because each time he breaks the mark he earns bonus money from meet organizers. "I hope I can keep this going until Atlanta," the Ukranian said.

Atlanta is the site of the 1996 Olympics. But Bubka added, "I try to forget things as soon as possible. All I want to think of now is jumping 6.14 (meters, 20-1)."
