Burton will compete in the tournament as an amateur at the 1989 U.S.

Open, hich will be held at the Indian Wood Golf and Country Club at Lake Orion, Mich. Sixty-four girls from California competed for six berths into the July 13-16 U.S. Open. Last year, Burton finished 44th and was one of only two amateurs to make the cut. In another tournament last week, Burton took first place at the Ail-American Prep National Golf Championship on Friday at the Biltmore Country Club in Phoenix.

The Spirit committed three errors and blew leads of 2-0 and 5-3 on its way to an 8-7 loss to the A's in front of 1,4 12 at John Thurman Field Monday night. Trailing 5-3. Modesto rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead. The key play in the inning came when left fielder Mike McDonald dropped Darryl Vice's fly ball which allowed two unearned runs to score.

Spirit shortstop Bryan King called for the ball initially, but McDonald raced in and called King off the play but dropped his attempted basket catch. "I thought he (King) was running backwards." McDonald said. "So I thought it was an easier play forme. But it wasn't." "He just went on instinct because he couldn't hear me with everyone yelling." King said. "He thought I was in trouble and it's his preference (to make the play)." Spirit first baseman Ruben Gonzalez cut the lead to 8-7 in the next inning with a two-run home run off A's reliever Rob Alexander, but the Spirit could get no closer.

It was Gonzalez's 14th homer. The lead didn't last long when Modesto scored its five runs in the bottom of the inning. Reliever Brian Baldwin (1-3) took the loss for the Spirit. He failed to get an out after he replaced Greg Burlingame with two outs in the sixth inning. Baldwin gave up a walk, a hit and two runs, one earned.

Rob Alexander (6-4) picked up the win for Modesto and Daryl Green earned the save. The Spirit took an early 2-0 lead as McDonald hit his 12th home run with a man aboard in the first inning. Modesto countered with a single run in the first inning, and two more runs in the second to take the lead, 3-2, after two innings. The Spirit let a chance to regain the lead in the third inning slip away. After Pritikin doubled and McDonald walked to open the inning, the next three San Bernardino hitters stranded the runners.

Spirit notes Adding to Spirit manager Ralph Dick's shortage of outfielders is a back injury to Dru Kosco. "He doesn't know how it happened," Dick said. "But he's going to see a doctor (Tuesday)." Mark Merchant hasn't started since injuring his wrist on Wednesday, so utility intielder Tony Woods continues to play right field. Sunday night's victory put the Spirit four games over .500 for the first time this year. "We finally did it," Dick said.

"I am a strong believer in tradition, it has got us where we are now," said Mrs. Haynes, 26, who was a member of the cheerleaders between 1982 and 1985.
