No Pitch, No Chatter- Can That Still Be FM? The listener, fed up with the clutter of talk programs and commercials that have invaded FM, twists the dial until he is stopped by the Beethoven Violin Concerto, just below the 100 mark. Twenty minutes later, at 11:15 PM, he is struck by the fact that the concerto is still going, that there was no 11 o'clock news report, or even a beep signal on the hour. Little does he realize that the mystery of station WIZZ has just begun. The concerto ends and a voice, a stiff, formal voice, announces, has presented Beethoven's Violin Concerto in Major, Opus 61, Jascha Heifetz performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Charles Munch, from 'The Top the 60 most popular classical performances.

This is WJZZ, 99.9 megacycles, Bridgeport, Conn." Then there is a minute of Handel's Water Music, unannounced, followed by "WIZZ presents 'The Top 60' And now, Tchaikovsky's 'Romeo and performed by the Vienna Philharmonic under Herbert Von And that's all. When it comes, the signoff is dispensed with in one sentence. No National Anthem. No "America the Beautiful." Unbeliveable, says the listener, I'll tune in again tomorrow night.

Only the next night, at the exact time, the station isn't there. In place of the beautiful music, the hissing sound of an unused FM frequency. That's strange last night it came in so clear, right on this spot And it's Thursday, why would they go off the air on a Thursdav? The next two nights it's back, the third night it's off again. Kenneth M. Cooper, general manager of WJZZ (short for jazz, the station's original message), attempted to unfold the puzzling aspects of his unique format.

"We have a theory on our AM station, WICC," he said. "Find out what the people want and give it to them. If we go by ratings of popular music, why not compile a list of the favorite classics?" After failing with the live-and-recorded jazz format in 1962 got tired of losing $60,000 a and simulcasting with WICC, Cooper started the "Top 20" classics in August, 1964, went to the "Top 40" in Febru- ary and the "Top 60" classics in May of this year. Cooper figured there were listeners who wanted good music, uninterrupted by anything except the name of the selections. That's why the station rarely goes off at its assigned time of 1 AM.

"We're on tape," he said, "and the engineer is instructed to sign off only after the last work is finished." Alas, the dream will be modified shortly. The annual loss is down to about $3,000, thanks to the cheaper operation of an all-tape format, but Cooper is not running a nonprofit public service venture. The FCC has granted him the right to go from 9,000 to 25,000 watts, which will make WJZZ the most powerful FM station in the metropolitan area. When the switch is made, Cooper will sell commercial time. "But," he promised, "the commercials will be brief, and spoken in the same straight manner." Why no National Anthem? "WICC is on 24 hours a day," Cooper said.

"I guess we're just not used to signing off. It's nothing intentional." The one phase of the mystery that remains unsolved is the station's occasional tendency to disappear. "I don't know," said Cooper. "We're 011 seven days a week. I have no answer for that -Cohn 'Slattery' Due for Ax Nov.
