Under the old regulations, a boy had to go on a 24-hour camping trip to earn the rank of first class scout. He could ride to the camp and back to his home again if he wished, The new rules make the matter of getting to the campsite more exciting. The scout must carry all of his equipment and supplies on his back while he hikes at least one and one-half miles to the camp. When he leaves, another one and one-halt mile hike is required. At camp, he will be required to cook three complete meals over an outdoor fire, and -perhaps toughest of all-lo cat them.

The old requirements were for one five-mile hike before becom-. ing a second class scout. The new rules will call for three five-mile hikes. Requirements for becoming an eagle, the highest rank in scouting, are much tougher than before. This tougher program was adopted by the Boy Scouts of America after a two-year survey of scoutmasters from all over the United States.

At first, it was thought that the new program would slow boys down in their advancement through the ranks of scouting, but it is not proving out this way, Duncan said. It seems that scouts and scoutmasters are rising to the bigger challenge which puts more physical fitness and adventure into their program, he said. 8 More Indians live in Arizona than in any other state about 82,000 at last count.
