Make Room for Paddy* Caotain Jinks Chet Huntley Is Weekend Farmer for Relaxation By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD - Chet Huntley's daily life is absorbed by the tempo of the 1960's, but on weekends the sad-eyed newsman retires to one of the oldest buildings still standing in the United States. Huntley's retreat is a farm house built in 1690 that rests amid the broadcaster's 230 acres of rolling farmland in western New Jersey, near Stockton. Built of fieldstone, the original two rooms have been extended to 10 and filled with genuine early American antiques by Chet and his wife, Tippy. The ancient building looks out on waving fields of timothy and is shrouded in tranquility. A herd of 40 heifers grazes on part of another 400 acres which Huntley leases. It is here that the jet pace of his job slackens, where he recharges his batteries for his multiplicity of newscasts for NBC, After a relaxed weekend Chet and Tippy climb into their car for the 60-mile drive to their town house in Manhattan and Huntley's pressure-packed job. our home in New York a 'town house' because that's what it was originally," he Explains. "There are only about a thousand of them left now. They started out 100 years ago as fashionable town houses for rich New Yorkers. "But due to economic cycles they became rooming houses, then tenements and flop houses. In the past 15 or 20 years they've been gutted and transformed back into plush town houses." Huntley's particular house is in the posh east 60s and was completely refurbished when he moved there three years ago. It contains six rooms, two on each floor. A kitchen and dining [room overlook the first floor garden. The living room and study occupy the second floor, and two bedrooms and baths constitute the third story. Huntley bemoans the fact that his garage is across the street where it costs him $45 a month to house the car. •'We'll soon be trading our Pontiac for a Dodge," he say;. "Chrysler will be sponsoring part of the 'Huntley-Brinkley' report this fall and we're making the switch out of loyalty." An automobile is a necessity only for trips to the farm. When the weather is nice Chet takes a 30-minute walk to work. It's a 10-minute ride in a taxi. He gets home by 7:45 in the evening and lets down with a drink or two before dinner — which is served at 10. Many an evening is occupied with friends in intensive bridge games at which the Huntleys are experts. Frequently Chet runs short of sleep, arising at 8 a.m. for a day of writing, editing and broadcasting. In addition to his nightly half-hour show with Brinkley he is preparing 10 one- hour specials for television and delivers 50 minutes of radio newscasts per week. At 52, Huntley is a father of two daughters by a previous marriage. Both are grown and lead their own lives.
