iiv! 1 99 V. 30 Winners and Losers In Bogosians Mirror SB, MUMS, ROCK ROLL By Eric Bogosian. Staring Tim Dolan and Joseph M. Marietta. Directed by Frederic DeFeis.

Designer-technician Fred Sprauer, costumer Karen Ackfey, lighting At Davis. At Arena Players Second Stage, 296 Rte. 109, East Farmingdaie, through Dec. 20. Seen Sunday night Dolan is impish and wild-eyed, though never threatening, in his various incarnations.

Hes appropriately disgusting in the Dirt monologue, spitting epithets about pollution, and utterly juvenile as a beer-guzzling survivor of Stag, the bachelor party from hell. In the second act, Dolan is the converted true believer behind bars; X-Blow, who extolls God to a rap beat, and the serenely straitjacketed inmate of another sort of institution in Dog Chameleon. He complains that being normal is expensive, while deriding other peoples standard of what is normal. Mantello, representing successful men, is more overtly manic. His characters from the physically rather than fiscally endowed Stud to the philandering deal-maker in Rock Law all wear excess like a badge of self-worth.

This neat back-and-forth between Dolans essential- By Steve Parks 8TAFT WRITER TS'NOT a pretty picture Eric Bogosian has painted in his provocative collection of soliloquies known as Sex, Drugs, Rock Roll. Excess is ugly. While theres nothing new in that message, Bogosian created and delivered it in a powerfully personal way. He performed the monologue himself originally, without benefit of costumes or sets, giving his words the weight of first-person OSH EATER I RECTO i OFF BROADWAY I I BROADWAY' Torwda at A Tom'w al 2 A A Sun 3 Musical theatre at its AMEfSCANBEST- Frank Rch. HELLO MUDDAH. HELLO FAOOUH! ly sane losers and Mantellos insanely acquisitive winners necessitates some juggling and cutting. DeFeis has changed the order of appearance of a few Bogosian characters and cut three more al-together. Although Sex, Drugs, Rock Roll does not seem to suffer by the change in sequence, it is hurt by the omissions particularly the finale.

As written, Bogosian closes his play with Artist, a paranoid monologue about the omniscience of computers and electronic co-conspirators. In this production, the play ends rather abruptly after live, an amusing but inconclusive overstatement about indulgence, the moral of which is a cliche: Dont live your life so good that you forget to live. But the editing takes nothing away from the splendid performances of both actors. One warning: The language and imagery throughout is rough sometimes savagely bo. II Though director Frederic DeFeis uses two ac-tors in his production at Arena Players plus a few props and mostly understated costumes this jagged tour of the American male ego retains its intensely personal edge.

The two actors represent roughly the two sides of the mindset Bogosian explores. Tim Dolan takes all the down-and-out roles. Hes the guy who opens the play by rattling a tin cup in the Grace of God monologue. This is the situation: I need your money, he says, approaching the audience for a contribution. Joseph Mantello gets all the high-roll-er parts.

Hes the rock star in Benefit who puts down drugs while reminiscing about how much fun they were. Then he quotes his new buddy, Vice President Quayle: Next time someone offers you drugs, just turn him in. This division of labor between Dolan and Mantello works remarkably well. Mapplethorpe Foundation trustees now serve on a new Photography Committee at the Gugenheim which will advise and consult on photographic shows and acquisitions. The wars between the National Endowment for the Arts, and Senator Jesse Helms were ignited when NEA funds to a small arts institution were used to mount a controversial traveling exhibition of Mapplethorpes work. The photographer died of AIDS, and the foundation was established to fight AIDS and support photography asan art form.
