Friday, Nov km her 4, 18U8. HITS l'LVMOVTH BFI IBL1CA HAKI) The South Bend Times editorially says: "The close of a political ca npaign, whether excited or tame, protracted or short, is welcomed by a great majority of newspapers. The campaign that is rapidly approaching its close has in some respects been the most remarkable in the history of the country. There has been less mud throwing, less lying, less slandering than in any preceding campaign. The people, as a whole, greatly appreciate this change for the better.

Only depraved persons look with favor on the disreputable methods once so prevalent in the political world." The Times evidently had in view the "Grinner" when it says that "only depraved persons look with favor or the disreputable methods once so prevalent in the political world-" For the benefit of the Times, we can give the information that the reformation sought, is hopeless. It is simply a case of jackass, "no pride of ancestry, and no hope of the future." RKPl BMCAN EDITOR A DEFAMKK. The "Gi inner" claims that he has made no personal attacks during the campaign. He has a queer notion of what a personal attack is. It is seldom that we care to take up a defense of a competitor in business but when we note the low, coward ly, fiendish assault made by the Republican upon the character and reputation of Mr.

McDonald, of the Democrat, it seems to us that we would not be doing our duty to the community should we allow such venomous attacks to be passed unnoticed. The "Grimier" has long since passed the stage when he might have won back the respect of his fellowmen, and knowing this he seeks as a sort of comfort to himself to tiaduce others. He has given the publications with which he is connected a character similar to his own, ami it is no wonder that few republicans as well as democrats any longer admit it at the family fireside. It is likely that the good name of Mr. McDonald will live long after the "Grinner" and his medium of defame" are forgotten.

The "Grinner" ieems to think that his slanderous attacks upon democrats which he calls "opening the books" are regretted by those in charge of the democratic campaign. While, it is true, they regret that any honorable citizen should be flagrantly abused by the "irresponsible" Grinner, these attacks are welcomed so far as their political significance are cono-ned. In considering a candidate wl has been maligned, the character of the maligner is always taken into consideration, don't you know Next Tuesday those tremendously weighty articles in our politically prejudiced contemporaries which have so increased their postal bills will give place to something of invest to others than the politicians. It v.ill all be over, but the shoutin' for a while. The Indianapolis News concedes that the democratic county ticket in Marshall county will have 350 majority, but the "Grinner" still keeps hammering away just as though he had a ghost of a show Poor old "Grinner." A Fester Correctly Defined. Mr. McDonald in this week's Democrat prints a clipping from the Kepub lican and then proceeds to curry the writer of it in scathing terms. The clipping is as follows: ''It is rumored that the editor of the Democrat attended a spiritual seance on East Court street, Indianapolis, last week, and one of the spirits told him if he did not return that 9160, Marshall county would go republican sure. This is why the old man seems so sad this week." Mr.

McDonald then proceeds with the following appropriate summing up of the It is understood that Kast Court street, in Indianapolis, is made up principally of houses of prostitution. Until 1 read the above item 1 did not know that there was r-uch a street in that city. I was not in any house on that street at that time named, nor any other time in my life. The inference in the above is that 1 was in a house of prostitution on that street, that one of the spirits was a prostitute who had told me to returu that -1'' 1 which the same paper had charged me with stealing from the county, knowing it to be absolutely false. The author of the above scurrious item, a pimp who is evidently very familiar with Kast Court street and its inhabitants knew there was no truth in the statement whatever, and he must have written it to injure me personally, for some unknown reAsonto me, for the purpose of smirching ray good name by associating it with low down prostitutes.

I denounce him as a cowardly, and libelous defamer of character, unworthy of the respect of decent people.
