Lafayettel on his return to France of Martha Washington She is the bit II woman in the world and beloved by all who know her HON SAWYER SAWYERA A SMITH Complimented by His Colleague of the Late Gen eral Assembly How He Stood For The Miners JCditor Mountain Advocate Barbourville Ky i DearSir I note the active interest I that Hon Sawyer A Smith your distinguished Representative in the General Assembly is taking in the candidacy of Col John Matthews for Congress It was my pleasure to serve with Mr Smith in the Hoaso of Representatives I being a mem ber from tho For ynintll District in the city of Louisville For seventeen years 1 have beep identified with labor interests land in the House during tho recent session I introduced a bill IJill1I This bill was designed to bettor I in every way the conditions unl del which the miners of the State must work It is the only bill of the kind which has ever had the thelch check veighman provision included therein It was a bill that tho miners of Kentucky wanted and one that is absolutely needed to safeguard their security of life and limb The bill also pro vided for the appointment of two additional Assistant Mine Ins Mr Smith was a member of the House Committee on mines and mining and in the Commit tee and out of it ho took the most active interest in the bill as interest introduced and fought against any amendments thereto sought to weaken the force of tho billu number of amendments having been proposed in behalf oj HIP miners operators of tho State After the Committee had agreed to favorably report the bill the opponents of the bill on seven difler otit occasions secured new hearings before the Committee and on every occasion amendments to the bill were urged by parties securing these hearings and there was an especial hostility on their part to the check weigh man clause Mr Smith throughout the pro ceedings fought against the amendments and against delay The bill was favorably reported by tho House Committee and i fht iJtJ i 7 was also favorably reported bj the Senate Committee and hyI the Senate was passed Thereupon the bill cause to the House and under time House prococjurc fell into the hands of the Rules Committee which Committee was compnced exclusively of Democrats Tho Rules Committee having exclusive charge of the bill in the House reported the bill fi the House with umcndments striking out the check man clause and also striking out tho clause providing for more cubit feet ofIlil for men and mules also striking out the provision which limited the mother of men to be in the mine when shots fired proper were The bill in this amended con liI tion was finally passed by the House and concurred in by the I Senate and becamo a law Mr Smith on the floor of the I House vigorously fought these I amendments and only voted for I the bill together with myself and all others intoresed in behalf i of the miners of the State when all hope of passing the bill in the original form was dostIoyedI I feel that the miners of the 1 Eleventh Congressional district should know these facts and 1 I fool that Mr Sin tlrs earnest I advocacy of Cal Mathews nomination should have great weight with the miners of your district might add that the Labor Un ion men of Louisville who allili ate with the Republican Patty are practically a unit for Fair banks Mr Fairbanks activity on the floor of the United States Senate in behalf of the eight hour law for employees on Govern ment works and his uniform consideration for the interests of labor have endeared him to the laboring men of this country
