Shortly after neon to-day tbe visiting aetdiery marched up Syc street to tba eonct-houaa, when they wera ad dresaed by lion. T.

J. Jsrratt, tbe major of this city. The excellent pre naaUons whicb wen adopted by the po? mawed an orderly and satisfactory anranaament of the troops upon the Courthouse Square, and there wai not a bitch in tbe programme. Mayor Jar? rett congratulated the soldiers upon their aaartisl appearance; extended them a hearty nakoma to tbe city, and urged anon them the necessity o' maintaining ender and military discipline. His speech was nell received.

At its conclusion tbe sold ien loruu-d into line and inarched ta Jarrett's Hold, where they were given a lunch. After a parade through the principal streets of the city the sol? diers mere marched to West-End Park. Then they gare the regimental and company drill most creditably. There ware aotne eight or nine companies in line, and their discipline and bearing wen excellent. Rev.

Giles B. Cook, rector of Si. Stephen's Episcopal church, in this city, who has accepted a cali to a church in Man land, was, with the late Dr. Alex. Weddell, one of tbe munnora of the Church work among the colored people here, and for years psst his whole time baa been devoted to that work.

He has accomplished a gnat deal, and his loss lo the Church in Virginia, in this respect, will be seriously felt. He hes boin line church and established a normal school for the colored children. at whicb, under the supervision of a corps of experienced teachers, many colored youths have been educated. Bishop Whittle felt great interest in this work, and always spoke with satisfac? tion of this church and the hearty spirit show by the colored people in their worship. Gratify inp reports continue to be re? ceived of the increasing popularity of tbe Democratic ticket in this section.

It is learned that in many localities the colored rote will bc to a considerable extent iliviiled in this election. Work and or p.iiii/st ion and good speaking will accomplish much, and we hope to have all these. Rokin Ap vin. I DOWN BY THE SEA. I anira pr -foi ii Ire I- ll.

The negro who did the cutting eluded arrest and ee-caped from the city. The "green-eyed monster" was thc casus belli. The convention for the nomination of two Democratic candidates for the House of Delegates will bc hold at Johnson's Hall to-morrow at noon. It is thought that with proper effort Nor? folk can be carried by the Democrats this fall, as a Democratic victory last spring waa won under circumstances not near so favorable as exist now.

Rev. K. Cridlin took formal therre pastor of the Baptist church yesterday morning at ll o'clock. He will also continue as missionary of the Baptist church at Ktmpsville and Salem. A wealthy lady of Freemason-Street Baptist church, in this city, will build a par? sonage for Mr.

Cridlin in Hrambleton at once, and when the house is finished he will resign as superintendent of the PoHsttiOUth Orphan Asylum. I bc distribution of the 20 per cent, dividend by the Exchange National Bank this week will be a tremendous help to our people just now. Leaving out the new bank just established, the fund to be distributed will amount to considerably more than the combined capital of all the banks in Norfolk and Portsmouth. Yesterday evening, after a remark? ably stormy passage down Chesapeake hay, tbe monitor Wyandotte arrived in Hampton Roads in tow of the tug May? flower, and cast anchor off the mouth of James river. During the trip down tba sea was so heavy that the Wyan? dotte had her forward cabin stove is, rolled fearfully, and her eommandisg officer, Mate Harold Neil? son, was washed overboard.

Fortu? nately he grasped some outrigging ef thc monitor and waa saved. Mate George Davis, of the Mayflower, was thrown down and badly hutt. The Mayflower became disabled and had to come up to the yard for repairs, after receiving she will tow Ihe monitor to City Point.
