lor Washington, Dec. 1C. Preparations have been completed by the Navy Department for the most ambitious tests of the wireless telegraph ever attempted. The scout cruisers Salem and Birmingham are equipped with apparatus capable of sending messages a distance of about 1,000 miles and receiving from a high power land station 3,000 miles distant. The land station will be located at Brent Rock, Mass.

The scout cruisers will follow a course from the west coast of the British Islands south toward the west coast of Afri- rc-1 tir in Hiropfinn of the West Indies. They will be about 1,000 miles apart. An attempt will be made to establish com. muncication not only between the two cruisers, but also between the land station and both vessels. If these experiments are satisfactory a high power wireless tower will be erected in or near Washington and the vessels of the navy will be equipped with instruments more powerful than those now in use.

The specifications for a high power wireless svstem require that communication must established in a-i seasons and climatic conditions over a distance of at least 1.000 miles between vessels at sea, and all vessels eauipped with high power wireless instruments must be able to receive messages over a distance of 3,000 miles from the land station. lately opened an office here, will have charge of the engineering work on the San Juan Plantation company's end of the canal, while Fred Warren, chief engineer of the Rio Grande Reservoir Irrigation Company, will attend to the Chapin-Clos-ner portion of it.
