IO lo 3. The Lancasters, who are now lied with the snd who are lighting hard for third place in the Eastern League, Blade their lirst appearance season st Virginia Park yesterday. It will bc remembered that tho Iron of Lancaster, Pa. (the same place from which this club come-), played here thc 3d and 4th of July last year, and had Pyle ss their best pitcher. He pitched yesterday also, and thc knowledge that he was oppo-iiip club from the same place where he was once so much compli? mented for his effective work in thc box seemed to stimulate him to put forth his best efforts, for he has never pitched (rame here when he was batted less frequently.

The were unable to punish him to the extent of more than three scattering singles. The Virginias, on the other hand, found Wotto! easy to handle, and punished him prcttA' severely, having made sev? enteen hits off him. The Lancas? ters would doubtless have been out had it not been for an error made by Nash, followed by a wild throw of Pyle's in the third in? ning. At this time thi' visitors had men on bases. The man on third started for home, but sr cmg that he could not get there he started back to 'hird.

In thc mean time thc ball had been thrown to Nash, giving bini a line opportunity to run the man down. This he started to do, but after having thrown thc ball several times he under? took to outrun thc runner and succeed? ed in touching him in thc bark just be? fore getting to thc home plate. Just as he touched the runner lie let the ball drop, and of course, he being in rapid motion, the ball rolled considerable distance, letting two men cross thc plate. Pyle picked the ball up, threw it to iTeenwood. who bad gotten on third and might have put out a man, but threw it several feet above (Jreenwood's head and let the third man come in.

Except this inning the home team played a very good paine. The contest Qnggsd through a little more than two hours without a feature except the home-run made by Iljggini on a ball knocked among the carriages between centre and lt ft Bald, Householder lcd in batting for the Virginias, having made four hits. Hof ford ami each did tine work behind the bat, but thc fornnir TOSS wild in throwing to BOCOnd. Wot? had not pitched a game ln-fore for Miine time. This possibly accounted for his wild delivery.

Johnston and Glenn each made tine catches, captur? ing balls for which they had to run a great distance. Ililand played a splen? did second The appended oflicial score tells tbs root! i VIHGINIAS. j.h. fi. ii.ff.p.o.

A Decatur (111.) special says: A highly-sensational attempt at wife-mur? der occurred in Decatur Thursday morning at 3 o'clock. Professor Charles Castleman came here from Virginia in May last, accompanied by his wife and three children. He was on his way to Tipton, it was forced to stop herc because on thc train ho had rfis playcd evidences of insanity. The family had of money and began hini-ekeeping. ihe Professor, who is well known in Virginia, where he had been connected the Lees burg Academy for many years, took a notion Wednesday that he would go back to Virginia, and ha 1 arranged to start to-day.

last night a brother of the Voung Men's Christian Association sat up with thc Frofessor, who hail been'acting riueerly. Shortly after 2 o'clock Castleman got a revolver and suddenly tvent out of the large room to where his wife steeping, crying ont that he would kill thc chil? dren and hini-elf. He hail cocked the revolver and had taki aim when the frightened watcher tanda a lucky catch at the madman's arni, and in a desperate struggle disarmed him. Neighbors who heard tho cries came to the It took half a do zen men to put Castleman under control. He severely injured several of them.

Thc took him to jail. Ile is a iery talented man of about thirty-eight years. His reason is dethroned because of too close application to studies. Some of thc Kentucky troops were amusing themselves; tossing one of their number in a blanket. A woman came along and began making jocular remarks, and. as she ul inclined to in the fun, sho was pitched in the blanket and shaken lp, As they tOBSOd her for nearly half an hour, and tore off nearly all her clothes, ihe, upon befog released. ran for the park police.

When the police retiirncl with her, she was un? able to identify lier sssailsnts, but the police kept her watching at Bslmonl Mansion, a hotel in thc park. After avbili bbs picked out Captain Cartis, of the Indianapolis Artillery, an 1 de? clared that he iras ons of har i and Captain Chasteaa, of the park guard, proceeded to arrest him. It was undoubtedly a cass ol' taksn identity, sad, as the park police insisted on anosting him, Captain tis. in his indignation, drew his -worri. The militia-men crowded forward to prevent thc artist, the polios railed upon the citizens to help them, and for a time the greatest confusion prevailed.

Finally-. Captain Va-ave-a --un tic would submit to thc authority of thc police. He iras taken to the guard-house, and after? wards held in on tho charge ol' assault with intent to kill. The unfor? tunate has created a threat isnss tion among the soldiers. MOUNTAIN OUTLAWS, I in Ui ililli.

Montreal telegram says It would that the Indian problem in the Northwest is not the only one with the solulion of which the Government will have to wrestle before long. The triter adds that the past winter was unusually severe inland for tne Bersiftis Indians that several, to avoid Btsrvstion, were obliged to est their hunt of furs; that- in one camp three died of hunger, and that there are dark rumors of their having committed can? nibalism ere finally succumbing to their terrible fate. Then he eyed the business-man. There wss no gleam of insanity in the latter's eye. He looked rational, calm, but angry.

One of the policies read Policy expires in Oc? tober, 1885." The other read: "Policy expires in November. He read them off tohis caller, but the latter never smiled. He only said: Yes, air; just as I told you." The peculiar phase of the blunder seems to be in the fact that the gentlemen could only, with the greatest difficulty snd sfter reference to cevcrsl diaries and calendars, be in? duced to understand that 1885 was not a thing of the past, and that October, 1885, was next October and not last October.
