ENTERTAINMENT I ROCK REVIEW Pavement: Middle of the Slacker Road PHOOT Jagged nek with a 10ft carter to Npeten wtn can take alraigrt Wednesday at Irving Ptaa 17 Irving PL Manhattan Cal opened hearsed blow-outs at Irving Plaza Wednesday (the first of two aold-out nights) tiie quintet was restrained and relaxed playing new and old songs with relative precision and not a trace of attitude A little more energy and some attention to set structure would have helped by the two-thirds point of a stylistically random 90 minutes the carefully modulated entropy had already devolved too for toward lethargic tedium but the non-boring parts of the show proved that Pavement has embraced a policy of musical inclusion without sacrificing any of its individuality The two drummers laid down slow sand attracting those who see their lives in much the same way To the consternation of parochial Pavement fans the current Rain Crooked (Matador) album brings a surprising bit of focus to raggedy pop-conscious guitar songs While still intentionally rough around the edges and determinedly resistant to as a value system the group now proffers an unwound distillation of the Replacements Dinosaur Jr Lou Reed and Sonic Youth a low-pressure blend of sweet melodies slacker apathy and tempered guitar dissonance Two years ago Pavement shows were lurching unpredictable unre steady and inconspicuous beats that occasionally verged on the downright languorous while guitarist Stephen Malkmus sang in either a cracked half-asleep groan or a dear light tenor Tunes from the new album especially and the single Your were effectively tuneful and aggressively driven the Dave Bru beck-inspired instrumental served as a breezy chaser to the Buddy Hollyish Thrown into this inconsistent environment even older songs like the Sonic Youth-influenced and the Fall-beat (sung by guitarist Scott Kannberg) were By Ira Robbins STAFF WHITER ONE OF the underground rock electives in collegiate search for a generational identity Pavement has until recently nerved itself up as an in-joke with no punchline Casually anonymous musically unclear and lyrically opaque the group defined itself in the vaguest of terms and therefore drew an irregular circle in the independent-label i uu i MOVIE MUSIC REVIEW Bach Shaw Resilient Space Monster Meets Match in Tokyo HIE JOKE MSSMM Music by Back The Attarta Symphony chorales In all three capacities chorus was exemplary There was a raw naked cruelly to its cries of and a chilling scheming violence to its greedy dividing of garments The clarity of diction rendered the polyphonic lines of passages such as have a sacred law with a gratifying transparency Even the hymns musically simple but difficult to sustain and phrase had a masterly touch It was hard alas not to be disappointed by the soloists Beside the chorus they were dull and earthbound and in several cases they flirted with vocal trouble As the Evangelist tenor Jon Humphrey sang with the ideal timbre and a vigorous energy hut he lacked toe foil range top and bottom notes hinted at vocal strain Soprano Henrietta Schellenberg sang with a add ragged tone that was not flattered by comparison to the warm sound Mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson had a comfortable appealing tone but sang without dramatic characterization Baritone William Stone who sang Jesus' was the most appealing singer but then Jesus get to sing much The performance waa sung in an English translation prepared by Shaw It retains both the personal fervor and the formal splendor of the original German and it trips off the tongue quite nicely It was easily understood in all but the most complex passages Philip Kennicott is a free-lance writer from within its own body The movie has a complicated premise that it makes a minimal effort to eluddate Don't ask what brings the rampaging Zeram to Tokyo wonder why Ilya (Yuko Moriyama) the beautiful galactic bounty hunter can capture Zeram only fay the monster into a temporary reproduction of the dty that contains buildings but not people Maybe director Keita Amemiya couldn't afford to hire extras after blowing the budget on special effects A pair of ordinary electrical workers Kamiya (Kunihiko Ida) and Teppei (Yukihiro Hotaru) are transsembled by mistake and forced to assist Ilya in subduing Zeram Kamiya and Teppei yre obviously supposed to make quite a comedy team you can tell by the way the former slaps the latter do the heed but their banter must tape something in the translation The business of is action and Amemiya keeps it coming accompanying the abundant violence with a refreshingly small amount of gore Needless to say the monster is incredifaly resilient but Ilya never loses her zest for one more battle a says Kamiya Or Japanese words to
