28 jSgjesbur 9Eegjster -MaiI, Galesburg, 111. Friday June 15,1 973 Energy Crisis: Farmers Fret, Canada Cuts Exports By JAMES ft. KING United Press International Wheat farmers in Kansas and county officials in southern New Jersey say they need more fuel than they are now getting and blamed the big oil companies for the shortage Thursday. American Aulomofbile Association bureaus in California and Iowa said about half of the gasoline stations in those two states were cutting back on their operating hours because of the lack of enough fuel. Will Stop Exports Meanwhile, the Canadian government announced it Will stop exports of gasoline and heating oil to the United states as of midnight tonight. In Illinois and Alabama, two oil companies indicated they are working overtime trying to meet the growing energy demand. In Chicago, Amoco said its 10 domestic refineries processed a record 1.05 million barrels of crude oil every day in May, topping the previous record by 53,000 barrels daily. And in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Hunt Oil Co. said it has started building a $13.5 million project to triple the production of gasoline, diesel and oil within 18 months. However, in Mount Holly, |N.J., the Burlington County Consumer Affairs office said in a civil rights complaint filed Thursday the Oil companies (were not doing enough to serve the citizens of New Jersey. The complaint, forwarded to the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Trade Commission, suggested the oil companies have been engaging "cartels, collusion, or monopolies." Want Investigation "We want an investigation," said Catherine A. Costa, director of the county office. She said the county received only one bid from 12 firms on an invitation to provide fuel for the county's cars and trucks. She said the single bid asked an increase of 65 per cent over last year's rate. "The rest sent letters stating Brunswick Tire Sale! Thru. Main St., Galesburg, 343-4216 they were sorry; they couldn't bid," Mrs. Costa said. In another fuel development in New Jersey, the state Highway Authority said it has obtained a restraining order preventing Texaco from rationing gasoline on the Garden State Parkway. In Topeka, Kan., E. J. Sicskcr told the Advisory Council on Energy and Natural Resources if he and other farmers don't get fuel for the wheat harvest, Americans may find themselves next year with money but no food —"and they'll learn that dollar bills don't eat so good. "On weekends, about every other car passing my place on the highway is either a camper or a car pulling a boat,*' Siesker' told a special state commission investigating the energy crisis. "They can get gas for pleasure, but it seems to me farmers should get a high priority." The farmers could buy fuel from retail gasoline stations, ibut the farm machinery used daily requires so much th$t they buy big quantities wholesale from rural distributors. However, the rural distributors said the major oil company franchise dealers seemed to have adequate fuel while the rural suppliers were repeatedly thwarted in trying to get fuel to their customers for the harvest.
