It is surprising that census enuemrators should have difficulty in getting certain people to give readily the information which the government desires to obtain.

An individual who will not willingly assist the enumerator to get an accurate count of the population and the wealth of the community in which he resides is either stupidly ignorant of the value of a correct enumeration to his locality or else has no interest in promoting its welfare. He 1s in fact a knocker of the most reprehensible kind. Anyone with an ounce of brains or a modicum of public spirit should know that it will be of inestimable value to his community to have the full number of its population and the aggregate value and diversity of its resources published in the census records. The information contained in these records will be used by the map makers, the financial journals, the compilers of atlases, state directories and the relative importance of any particular community in comparison with another in the county or state will be judged by the showing made. All information which is given as far as any individual is concerned is held strictly private by the government.

Those people who act on the theory that an enumerator is impertinent in asking the questions he is required to ask are doubtless ignorant of the fact the fundamental law of the nation requires that this enumeration be made at stated intervals. There is perhaps no agency in our political system more valuable in promoting the social well being of the nation than the Information which a correct census provides. This information furnishes the basis on which remedial legislation is conditioned. The slogan of every patriotic citizen should be "Help the enumerator." KEEP THE CRT CLEAN. Tn insisting on a clean city, the health officers should have every encouragement from public spirited citizens.

It is always easier to prevent disease than to cope with it when it takes the form of an epidemic. Dirt and filth in back alleys and back yards is the cause of much preventable sickness. If the health authorities can stimulate a opinion which will not tolerate brepding places for flies which carry disease germs, there will be no epidemic of typhoid in Wenatchee. In Europe in those countries in which population is most dense, there Is less sickness in proportion to the -number of population than in American -communities. The reason is J.

"THE OLD STRONG BANK" We extend a cordial invitation to newcomers and prospective residents of the Wenatchee Valley to make use i of our extensive facilities for the transfer of funds from I other localities, and welcome new accounts, no matter whether large or small. WENATCHEE, WASHINGTON. Help the Census Man If You're Going Away Send Him Your Name Everybody who lives in Wenatchee is entitled to be counted in the coming federal census. A.

M. Storch, supervisor for the third census district, with his local deputies, are going to make a diligent effort to prevent anybody from going uncounted. Naturally there are some who live In this city and who have outside of the corporation, possibly outside of the county, during the enumeration period which extends from April 15 to May 1. In order that Wenatchee may be given its correct census, the officials of the commercial club are particularly anxious that all such persons should send their names to the secretary before going away- It is the duty of everybody to aid the sspervisor as far as possible In securing a complete census of the city. If you are a resident of the city and are not to be in the city the 15th of April, fill out the following coupon and mail or leave it at the Wenatchee Commercial club.

Name Wenatchee Residence Address Married or Unmarried plain. Necessity has forced them to study sanitary conditions and sanitary laws are rigidly enforced. In this country where laws are enforced with less rigidity than in Europe, more reliance must be placed on a strong public sentiment to make up the deficiency. In any community an individual who disregards sanitary laws does the community more injury than does the burglar or the petty offender. Death always lurks in the shadow of filth.

The health authorities should be given words of encouragement rather than words of discouragement. VIEW POINTS OF THE PRESS. The Timber Frauds. In view of the facts revealed by the report of the committee it is evident that their work instead of being completed now, as the terms of their apointment contemplated, has only just begun. The work of the committee should be continued.

The state must go to the bottom of every sinuous or blind way which when examined may lead the state to recover some of the losses which it has so evidently suffered. Fortunately the physical evidence of what appears to be systematic fraud is not lacking. Even if the timber has been removed from timber lands in most instances the stumps can bo found and become mute witnesses to convict whoever, if any one, may prove to be criminal. Efficient Citizens. Ministers are more active and efficient citizens than they are generally credited with being.

The prominence of Spokane clergymen in the "Know Your City" movement calls attention to this neglected fact. It was a minister. Sydney Strong of Seattle, who originated this movement. It was Beecher of Brooklyn who rendered services to the Union that Lincoln said were worth an army. It was an other clergyman.

Manasseh Cutler of Connecticut, who secured the famous article in the "ordinance of 1787" that made the central west free soil. Minority Government. Cannonism is merely another name for blind following of party. So long as hidebound party rule obtains, and members styled republicans or democrats feel obliged to surrender their convictions on important questions In deference to the decisions of a caucus, we shall have governments by a simply of a majority of that party which has a majority of the House government by a minority is Cannonism Beginning with the mugwumps, who first supported Cleveland, al-; most every step toward political reform in this country, whether national, state or local, has been taken by breaking party lines. The insurgent republicans who voted against Cannon in March stepped boldly and well in the right direction.

And yet to kill Cannonism will require persistent stepping. Saturday Evening Post. The New York Election. Bossism seems to have been the chief issue, but whether it was or not, it is a fact that tho country will have a democratic congress, unless a change occurs. And it will occur.

Pinchot has held his conference with Roosevelt and declares that he may have something important to say when he returns to America. Root is going abroad shortly and undoubtedly will have a talk with the former president. It will not be many weeks before Roosevelt himself returns to this country. His view of conditions, as expressed by the men with whom he confers and as expressed by himself, will undoubtedly have a big influence. Roosevelt will never leave his party but if he is not satisfied he will bring his party over to him.

The retirement of Aldrich and Hale is one of the incidents indicative that he can accomplish that very thing, for the old influences, of which those two senators have been the leaders. and which were swatted directly in Massachusetts and indirectly in New York, have always opposed Roosevelt's leadership, and now they are waning. The next few months will see a big get-together movement in republican ranks all over the country and the roseate dreams of a Bryanesque congress will vanish. Herald. COURT HOUSE BLOTTER Rel.

Champion Marathoner Says He Would Like to Become Fighter. Gustave Ljungstrom. the pygmy sized Swede who smashed tbe world's record for miles 385 yards at tbe Polo grounds, in New York, recently, when he went the distance in 2 hours 34 minutes 8 2-5 seconds, says he is through with the Marathon game and will in the future confine bis efforts to fifteen and twenty mile contests Ljungstrom is also anxious to become a fighter and is at present thinking of taking lessons in the art of self defense and may some time in the near future be seen in tbe ring. In talking of the boxing game recently he said: "I want to learn bow to box. I'd like to be a fighter.

Yes. 1 would like to bang the other fellow on the nose and get the money. I'd quit running if I could learn how the American boys get the wallop." Ljungstrom has the most striking appearance of any distance runner per OUSTAVK WVNSBTROM, CHAMFIQS MARA moras. forming today. He spent tbe required six months in the Swedish army, and he is an erect, cocky little fellow.

In training for tbe recent contest he ran 170 miles in training. Twice he went twenty miles Just to see bow strong he would be at the end of that distance. Dorando has burled a challenge at the Swede, and It is more than likely the pair will meet shortly if tbe Italian will consent to go a distance under the Marathon route. Ljungstrom is a phenomenal runner. one of the best that erer visited this country.
