I LILCO ASHAROKEN 600 FT. I EDGEWOOD STATE HOSPITAL jDEER PARK 188 FT. HEMPSTEAD WATER DISTRICT TOWER ROOSEVELT RACEWAY 188 FT. MONTAUK MANOR SOFT. tans tallest building the World Trade Center is 1,350 feet; the Empire State Building is 1,250 feet, but 1,472 feet with the TV tower.

On Long Island there is no question about the highest of mans monuments. Thev are the 600-foot stacks of the Long Island Lighting Co.s plant at Asharoken. LIL-COs structures are almost as high its rates. The LILCO stack at Port Jefferson is 425 feet tall. LILCO has 400-foot weather-testing towers at Jamesport and Shoreham, and plant stacks that reach 350 feet at bland Park and 247 feet at Glenwood Landing.

The tallest building in the U.S. is the Sears complex in Chicago, 1,454 feet, and the highest in the world is the CN Tower, Metro Center, Toronto, Canada, 1,805 feet. As far as can be determined, LILCO does not plan a smoke stack to top that. Right here on Long known as'the World Trade Center, be-, cone an unmistakable part of the Manhattan profile? If thats the high life, Nassau and Suffolk are centers of the low life, architecturally speaking anyway. Long Island was made flat by nature and its residents have not done much to change that.

bicounty skyline, if you will, generally can be sketched by placing a pencil on the left side of a blank page and drawing a horizontal line over to the right side. Its the low-slung look, said Arthur Kunz, deputy director of the Nassau-Suffolk Regional Planning Board. Its not as exciting as Manhattans or Chicagos, but we do have a skyline its water towers. It's really more than that. There really are some buildings around Long Island that rise above it all.

The highest one is the 341-foot Health Sciences Center nearing completion at State University, Stony Brook. The second highest is the 242-foot Nassau County Medical Center in East Meadow. In fact, if you put all of Nassau-SufTolks most upstanding structures together in a row as LI did on these pages you can make a dandy instant skyline. Aside from the few truly lofty buildings, students of the Long Island horizon agree that three things make it stand out: (1) municipal water towers that resemble robots waiting for the word to attack, (2) radio and TV antennas that look like mutations of a radiated Erector Set, and (3) more than 700,000 one-family houses punctuated here and there by apartment or office buildings that ordinarily reach a breathtaking six stories, or about 70 feet. Purists may quibble about Manhat Bjr Tom Morris Photos by Harvey Weber Fran the towers of London to the skyline of New York City to the vertical sweep of Hong Kong, the tall structures of the world are among mans most elevated achievements.

Except maybe on Long Island, where the closest thing to heaven is the 600-foot smokestack on top of a power plant. Like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at a midgets convention, height can be distinguishing. Doesnt the 984-foot Eiffel Tower make an instant French connection? Who would be un-American enough not to associate the 555-foot Washington Monument with a certain U.S. city? And hasnt that double shaft, Tom Morris is News day's planning and transportation writer. September 22, 1974 7.
