A king of Babylon ordered crema- i tion for his subjects, and built for that a practice the first furnace; but Messrs. 8hadrach, Mechach and Abednego 11 would'nt cremate.

ti This world is all a fleeting show, How sweet f.am it to pass, To valish up, tihe chimney as Carbonic acid gas! The worst feature about the cremation business is that some winter mnorning, in a fit of philanthropy, your widow's second husband may empty your ashes on the icy pave- a meat for the benefit of pedestrians. It is calculated that if the body of each of the persons who died in the United States in 1870 was allowed a full-sired grave, the whole would occupy about 250 acres. If they were cremated, the ashes would make excellent manure for about a tbousand acres. ii Don't lay me on the river bank Amid the fragrant flowers, Nor where the grass is watered by The early Summer showers; etm put me in the kitchen range, And open wile the danmper; And then my vaporous remains Can up the chimney scamper. In- 18G( a man named Gillen, A Confederate soldier, who was home on a furlough, chased a fox into a cavern in the mountain, and built a fire in the same to smoke it out. Ile passed the place about three weeks afterwards, and the fire, which was still burning, had penetrated the mountain further than the eye could see. His furlough having expired he went back to the army. After the surrender at riosity prompted him to visit the spot Much to his surprise he heard an indistinct roaring in the bowels of the mountain and putting his bhnd to the mouth of the cavern, he inhaled the gas from burning coal. lie is ofopinion that the whole mountain is one vast coal bed, and that his little adventure with the fox will ultimately lead to the destruction of this continent.

We give the story for what is worth. Any one too stupid to believe it should read the Life and Adventures of Baron Munchauson. When to Cut Clover. Sonime exlp" rnents the nutritive value of clover bay, are reported by Wagner, a (Grman. In a field of red clover three continuous Isrcels of equal size measured off.

From one the clo' er was cut, May 22, just before the beginning of the blossom from the second, June 13, in the full blossom; and from the third, July 1, toward the cud of the blossom The amounts of hay obtained were 85, 1 14 and 128 Ilxlnds respectively. The hay was analyzed. and its nutrive value thus estimated. It appeared that the amounts of nitrogenous substances were about the same in all, and that the older the hay contained also much larger of crude a fibre, and that its ingredlients were so much less digestible, that its nutritive value was less than that of the smaller but jounger crop. The author recomnmends, therefore, that clover be cut either when in full blossom or even before beginning of the blossom.
