work was subsequently stalled when rising costs exceeded the funds Then in March 1952 construction was stalled by a lack iff high priority steeL Ihe steel arrived in May 1953 but two months later a truck driven strike stopped work again Finally on Oct 6 1953 the last steel girder was put in place on the main span READY FOR TRAFFIC The Captree Bridge spanning the Great South Bay will be officially opened with ceremonies presided over by State Park Commissioner Robert Moses on June 12 The $11300000 project is the longest over-water span in state 500 Vote for Transit Strike Authority to Seek Injunction New York (AP) The first batch of CIO Transit Workers voted for strike by a show of hands yesterday as the Transit' Authority set in motion legal action to get a court injunction banning the threatened stoppage About 500 members of Michael union workers at the IRT uptown shops wildly cheered a union official who told them the author rejection of a fact-finding report on wage increases left them other alternative but to strike the city subway With a unanimous show of hands the men authorized the strike which already has been set for 12:01 AM June 14 Other segments of the 15000 Union Transit Workers will vote on the strike question through next week A Transit Authority spokesman meanwhile announced that the general counsel Harold Warner has been instructed to apply in State Supreme Court for an injunction against the strike The spokesman said the application will be ready to file in court in a few days possibly Monday Hie spokesman said the grounds for the application will include the contention that a strike of bus and subway workers would violate the Condon-Waldin Act a state law prohibiting strikes by public workers The authority also will argue that the health and safety of six million subway riders would be endangered by a strike Quill already has said he will get top legal talent to fight any action brought under the Condon-Waldin Act A TWU spokesman said the New York City CIO Council would meet to plan for mobilizing CIO AFL and Independent Brotherhoods behind the fight NLRB Eyes Challenged PierVotes New York (AP) The National Labor Relations Board today put the microscope to challenged ballots that hold the key to union control of New vast waterfront The inquiry may take weeks The old International Assn (Ind) held a narrow 319-vote victory margin over a rival AFL union in the second dose bargaining election in five months But the I LA claimed most of the 1797 challenged ballots were challenged by the AFL and thus presumably are I LA votes On that line of reasoning the ILA claimed sure victory The turnout of less than 20000 longshoremen at voting was about 1000 below that of the previous NLRB election last Dec 22-23 Unlike the first election which was voided because of ILA violence at the polls voting went off -smoothly without a single trace of violence NLRB regional director Charles Douds called it the most orderly ever seen The final count was: ILA 9110 AFL 8791 challenged 1797 Only 51 longshoremen indicated that they wanted neither union The apparent victory of the bankrupt sorely beset ILA left it with hairline control of the 25000 New York longshoremen If it is certified by the NLRB it will be in a position to bargain with shippers for all dockers Tire 62-year-old ILA was kicked out of the AFL last Sept 22 for failure to purge itself of racketeers Since then the new AFL dock union of the same name has waged a vigorous campaign to wrest control of the docks from the old organization With the ILA in control of the waterfront the influence of John Lewis president of the United Mine Workers (Ind) is expected to be felt strongly Lewis has bankrolled the ILA during its fight for life and there has been talk of an eventual affiliation between xthe two independent unions Gary Out Bing Subs New York (UP) Cary Crosby will be unable to begin his radio show June 6 because of injuries he suffered in an automobile accident this week the Columbia Broadcasting System announced last night father Bing will substitute for him on the opening show' CAP Wintnoli!
