Vegetables And Fruit to Be Plentiful WASHINGTON (UPI) - This weekend shoppers will find good buys in pork and beef as well as a harvest abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits. Meat choices will include ground beef and roasts, pork chops, roasts, and bacon along with lamb chops and the ever popular broiler-fryers. Produce counters will be displaying a bounty of vegetables such as green beans, cabbage, celery, corn, cucumbers, lettuce, onions, peppers, radishes, squash, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, and tomatoes. Fresh fruit choices will include apples, grapes, honeydews, peaches, and plums. Good buys for those meatless meals include tuna, canned Maine sardines, fish sticks and fish portions along with good supplies of dairy products. Here is a look at food counters in Illinois: More-than - ample supplies of red meat, poultry, and fresh produce—all at reasonable prices —await shoppers this weekend. Look for pork to be featured at most meat counters as supplies increase. Recommended buys in elude loin roasts, chops, steaks, spareribs, ham. and bacon. Beef is expected to continue wearing recently attractive price tags. Loin steaks and roasts, rib and chuck roasts, tenderloins, and ground beef will be good values. Lamb chops also are recommend ed. The spotlight in most poultry departments will be on broiler- fryers. Stewing hens also are considered reasonably priced. A colorful array of fresh fruits featured will be grapes, plums, avocados, and apples. In some areas pears and peaches, also, are good choices. Though the season is almost over, watermel ons and cantaloupes are still available at appealing prices. In vegetable bins, potatoes, corn, cabbage, and squash will capture shoppers' interest. Other good values include: Dry onions, celery, cucumbers, green peppers, cauliflower, tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, greens, lettuce, and radishes. Illinois fish markets will offer plenty of clams, fillets, halibut, scallops and yellow perch. Ups and Downs NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Being a ship's captain has its ups and downs. And keeping up with them is a matter of vital dollars for captains such as Jean Morize, master of the French cargo vessel Mekambo. Capt. Morize noted that the port of Savone, Italy, has a draft of 30 feet. But when the Mekambo took on 22,150 tons of coal at Lamberts Point it sank to a draft of 33 feet. He calculated the 12-day trip to Savone will burn up enough fuel to bring the Mekambo up to 30 feet. Actually, the ship could load another 5,000 tons of coal, but that would make a difference of one toot — enough to put the Mekambo aground in the Savone channel. The Mekambo sailed from Genoa for Norfolk with 13,000 tons of ballast. About 7,000 tons of this was discharged en route. Coming in, Capt. Morize had a problem of a different sort. The vessel had to be deep enough to get under the coal loaders at Lamberts Point. Former School Class Greeted AtE.
