FRIDAY, JULY 23, ISG9. Congregational Mite. The meeting of this Society at the residence of II. B. Green, was a verr pleasant affair, and did credit to that gentleman and his estimable lady.

We learn that the proceeds amounted to over $40. Mowing Match. There will be a trial of Mowers at the residence of the widow Davis, in Marion township, Tuesday, August 2 We learn that several of the best machines will be represented, and it will no doubt be an interesting occasion for farmers. A general in vitation is extended. Postmaster at Rawson.

Daring a recent visit to Bawson we made the acquaintance of an old subscriber of the "Jeff," in the person of Dr. J. Miller, who has lately received the appointment oi Postmaster at that place. The Dr. leads the "forlorn hope" against the Democracy in misnamed Union town, ehip, but we should take him to be the man that is fully able for the task.

His appointment as Postmas ter was well deserved, and he is in every respect well qualified. Benton Items. We called at the establishment ol D. D. Snyder Co.

while in Benton last Tuesday. We found our young friend doing a thriving business in the Dry Goods trade. May he pros per. We also called a few moments with T. J.

Saunders, an old friend of the "Jkff," who is engaged in the Boot and Shoe trade, and found him flourishing "like a green bay tree." He has been one of the fast friends of the "Jeff." in times past, and authorized to act as agent herealter. Any person in that township, wishing to subscribe, can call with him. We learn that the M. E. Camp Meeting, which was to convene near that place on the 15th.has been post fQBpi k.

ft 9t August A Wife Worth Having. We spoke last week of a visil to Mr. Jonathan A rand's, of A maniia of Mr. Ruthrauff start- ing a Reaper and Mower for Mr. A.

We have since learned that Mr. Aurand was unable, owing to scarcity ot hands.to procure sufficient help to harvest his wheat, and that Mrs. A. volunteered to drive the reaper, and did so until the whole cf forty acres was harvested. Mrs.

A. is an excellent housekeeper, as we know from personal observation, and we do not believe that as a harvest hand she can be surpassed in the State by any of her 6ex. Such a woman is worth a thousand of the "fashionable ladies" whb 6hriek at the sight of a toad or swoon in the presence of spider. We hope Mrs. A.

will forgive the appearance of her name in print. We were sorry to learn that in the same locality a reaper was run all day the ensuing Sabbath (July 11). We cannot believe that it was a work of either "necessity or mercy." We have a seed time and a harvest promised us, and we think it shows great trant of faith to violate the Sabbath day through fear of famine. For our part, we have always had faith to be lieve that He who hear etU the "young ravens when they cry unto Him" will not fail to provide for the young wolves. We hope we shall pever find it necessary to speak of such a viola tion of the Sabbath day again.

The Crops. A short trip through the south -western part of the county, during the beginning of the week, enabled us to form a slight estimate of the enormous crops being harvested. Many of the farmers had finished cutting wheat, and a few were engaged in hauling in. The wheat crop is simply magnificent, and we think it will be saved with but slight loss, from the appearance of the weather at present writing. We think that the foreign demand will keep the price from going as low as some have anticipated, and that our.

farmers will realize a fair compensation for their labor. Oats, flax, and timothy look equally as well as wheat. The corn crop looks bad, especially on the low lands. Here and there a piece that lies high, or had the advantage of drainage, looks well. The partial failure of this important crop of our county should teach our farmers the great importance of un-der-drainage.

Many fields have fallen short the present season a sufficient amount to have paid for drainage. Will our farmers learn from this experience that the money expended in good tile drains is the very best investment they can make tt i .1. i tuc-y VT- Intemperance. Saturday, July 10th, was the fullest day we ever witnessed in Findiay. Our farmers were as busy as bees in the harvest field, and our streets were deserted.

Last Saturday, however, the town presented quite a different appearance. Many of our farmers had finished cutting wheat, and the day being unfavorable for harvesting, our town was crowded to overflowing; and, we are sorry that candor compels us to make the statement, we witnessed more drunkenness than on any day for the previous three months. We are very sorry to say that we fear, there is as much "tangle-loot" sold in our place as ever. Sanitary. Marshal Buhl has been comic down on our people with regard to putting up "porkers'' and cleaning of gutters.

The unprecedented fall of rain during the past three months has rendered it next to impossible to keep our streets in order. Thoee who are inclined to find fault with Mr. Ruhl should take this matter into consideration. A continuance of the present weather, with the present condition of will result in much sickness, and the new Board of Health, to be appointed, will have an excellent opportunity to earn their fat salaries. Samuel J. Thompson, of this township, has the honor of being the first in the market at this place with new wheat, having sold 400 bushels of Bed Winter to Mr. George W. Myers. It is clean and plump, and shows the advantage to be derived by using clean, first-class seed.
