fe MONDAY, OCTOBER 2, LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Excursion to o'clock, and licet steamer, Magenttv Cant. Baulsir, left her wharf on a pleasure excursion to the Capes. With a commendable spirit of liberality the of the New Line, H. V.

Tompkins, issued a number of invitations to our merchants and citizens, and extended his courtesy to the press. The elite and fashion of Norfolk and Portsmouth took advantage ol" the occasion, antl the ladies turned out in force, accompanied by their escorts. At ti P. Bf, the Magenta arrived at Old Point, and after remaining a few minutes steamed out, in company with the Leary. Both boats ran side by side for about three miles.

The race was quite spirited, and excited quite a lively-interest among all on hoard. After fully convincing the Leary of the speed ofthe Magenta, Captain Baulsir bora away for Ihe Capes, that all on board might enjoy the benefits of a cnoonligh! excursion to the full henl of their Inclination. The votaries of Terpsichore, animated with the delightful music of an excellent string hand, devoted the of au hour to the lively dance. AYlun supper and were announced, those who had not an opportunity to dance before, enjoyed the benefit fd" that great delight while others ate. The excellent band of the 13th Illinois enlivened the interest of the scene on hoard by discoursing refined selections from the various opeas--favorite gaUopaoes and our soul-stlrriug national airs.

The officers of ihe boat, Captain Baulsir. I). H. Hill, the courteous Clerk, Arthur Linn, the favorite of the Mattano, antl the agent of the line, 11. V.

Tompkins, vied with each other in catering lo the comfort ami enjoyment of the guests on board. Tlie representatives of tha press were particularly attended to, and all enjoyed the excursion ami appreciated I lie courtesy and liberality of the officers of the Magenta. Capt. Baulsir is tlie very persoliilieation of an obliging man, antl a fine fellow generally. I), ft.

Hill, the clerk, appears as happy as it clam at high water, at the very Idea of being able to oblige you. Arthur Linn, the clerk of the Mattano, is young in years hut old in good humor, and bids fair to he not only a general favorite but an efficient man. 11. Y. Tompkins is (lie combination of all qualities, and hppreelates the press and its representatives, therefore he is hound to prosper, as well as-the interest he represents.

This excursion was the grand afiair of the season. one single Incident 00-, i curreel to mar the pleasure of the occa- i tiion, which of itself is an evidence I thnt everything was properly managed to insure the piaasure and comfort ofthe numerous Invited guests. The ladles spoke in raptures of "What a delightful time!" "Oh, how sorry lam It-Is over!" i Many left satisfied with the poet's expe-! Uttia lioiirof joy to nif, Mcrtli 'lull i-ti'rtiily," Long live the Magenta, and her ac-; i commodating crew. Titr. WATS- a large number nf citizens repaired to the City Hall last for Ihe purpose of ultendlngthe water-supply meetlnir.whloh was advert isetl to take plane at o'clock hut the hall-doors were sealed, and Mr.

Lockhttrl being absent, from I town, they were not opened until eight o'clock. Owing to this delay, many gentlemen Impatient nntl went 1 away. BtiU, there Was, with those lhat remained and those thai dropped in af- afterwards, a fair gathering. Mr. William T.

Harrison presided, and Mr. 8. Forreat acted aa i3eoretarv. iSiieeehes were made by Messrs, George Blow, W. H.C.

Ellis, E. 11. Lindsay and Colonel George Bangster, The speech of Colonel Blow was a powerful and convincing argument in favor of water, and fully met all the objections advanced against it by the most i exacting among the Van Winkleites. Mt. Lindsay's tmecdote about the preacher and' the old ship of Zion, with the negro overboard and notime to wait forhim, was a good hit, well timed, and particularly applicable to that mode water-works, viz: it negro and two buckets.

On motion of W. li. C. Ellis, (lie lollowlng committee of live were appointed by the chair, viz: H. C.

Ellis, S. R. Borum Marshall Parks, ('. W. Buttz, and John P.

Leigh, to prepare business for the nextnieeling, and attend to having the hall lighted and prepared for the use of the citizens on Saturday night, October "th. On motion of C. W. Buttz, tht? ing adjourned pro tun. until the Tt It in- i staut, at 7J o'clock.

This is considered the greatcsl triumph of modern dramatic attempts by tbe critics, and it certainly is a most interesting play.
