The convention aiucciuiea at 1 M. and promises be a moat lively one, as there are al ready numerous delegaloj in the city and others arriving by evtrj train and horseback route leading into town. The starters in the race will bo piuient Senator John H. 11 Bird, of Whitley; Judge King, of Jscknor; and Representative of I.iuril; and it is proba ble that I'uUnki may enter the ring with a dirkhoHeto mipply the vacancy caused by the wltlidnwil of D.

Parker. There are icvcral of the nforen'tid eablc Meeds crcoming in the background ready at the lirfl blast of the bugle horn to oanttr onto the track in front of the grand, ipirited enough to ''run the race from cend toecud." (Our horse reporter is out.) Among the latler are Columbus Washington Lester, cf Wbitlev; William Leroy Brown, of this towt; Richard Leonida Kwell, that price less republican jewel, whose pojtollice is London, aud Marcellus John Moss, of Ball. It is safe to say there will be a very (hod of mountain oratory turnul loose upon a patient peop'e. Hon James II. Tin-ley, who stands at the head of tho bar of Hut ern Kentucky, will preeeul Senator Wilson's name before thu convention and will doubtlers "so the past rise before him like a dream; D.

Smith, a late totLe London bar, will nominUe Mr. IJimsej; Judge Culton will nominate his counlyman, Judge King, while Kinley, or Col. We perhapi hizird nothing in saying that the talented young Win. A Morrow, I'gentiemcn of the will heard from during the proceedings. II Trimble, of Pulaski, that un tiring and uuexcelled convention wire worker, the man who held the oonvention at this place on an occasion still by many, for four long days aud wound up br nominating his nun, the late Senator Uiluiore, agiinst odds, is here in tine fighting I rim Were I a republican aipirant for ollic nhicb, thank God, I am not, and until I lote the balance of my scattered brain, will never be, I should fel mysoif exceedingly fortunate in haying Green Trimble for my lieuteuant. Mr Trimble says Pulatiki does not want theetrth, which may be true, but developments since my opening remark point clearly to the fact that uhe would not object to ''accepting" the Senatorial nomination and Judge Paul will in all probability be tbeir man. As for me, however, I believe Senator Wilson will tueceed himself in the Kentucky Senate, although I heard a well posted man this morning otlering to bet two to one en Judge King, of Jackson I -rill bf able to give a full report in my next and should anything "diap" in the interim, or elsewhere, will wire you la Bro.

Caper C. William, it legal luminary cf the first msgnitude, staticnary at Ml. Vernon, shines over our city this muruing.

S.tui Ma gen suffered a eevere sunstroke yesterday evening and is io a critical conlitioi thi morning. John has returned from a Western trip. Logan county, fainou for its ghost stories, furnishes a genuine Hlder Haggard hair raiser this morning Attracted by the tolling of a church bell, a reputable cit'zen mounted his horse and followed the sound, which came from a deierted church situated in the "Dead a section ofenun try three miiea long, covered with swamp, The long-deserted edifice appeared to be lit up with an unearthly red fire, while group ed around what had once been the altar were a dczen figures clothed in whitu, the face. covered with black hoods, the long arms and ileihless fingers pointing acros the altar, on which lay a figure aimiUr to the others. The ghostly band marched around the altar three time, when the red light gradually died out, and the reputable citizens horse became frightened and ran away, putting an end to further investigations.

There is evidently still a very red article of liquor in Logan county. C. J. WILLIA VSBURG, WHILEr COUNTY Mr. H.

A Poteot, formerly of Sidney, Ohio, will tako charge of the Central Hotel, at this place, July 1. Parties engaged in the slur route business begin to drop in one at time as the 1st of July, tho time for the term of service to begin, draws near. Mis, Brock, one of the toicher of the Williamsburg Xormnl t'ctiool, led Monday for Homerset.

Mrn. Brock ii nn excellent teacher and made many fiieuds during her short stay in Williamsburg. Bro. Craft was right when he tstaid Williambur'. pitcher lu the match game of sj lull At on Jon wa profesilunal.

So are all the Williamsburg boyo professionals, but he was not right in stating that "Mr. James Aeh had only been in since Taeiday list." Your ctr respondeat upon reading the article referred to and feeling an interest in tho Williamsburg boys, interviewed eome of the club in order to ascertain how lou(! Mr. Ash had been with the boys nnd all aree that he was with them in their games of praciico prior to tho orgtnlzition of the club and that he has Lean a resident of Williamsburg and vicinity nearly years, but it is ntccsury for the London boys to have some excuse for their defeat. Circuit Caurt is in session with one murder cl.8 on the criminal docket which is set for trial on the Sth day of the term. It is the case of the Commonwealth ys William Broiuhton, charged with the murder of J.

W. Whisteuhunl. The case of the Commonweallh vs. William Wilson, colored, charged with rape is set for tic l-th day of the term. John Wilson was tried in two cases for house breaking and stealing and found guilty in each and punishment fixed at one year in the penitentiary in one cnu and two yean in the other case.

Joseph Harris, of color, was found guilty of robbery and eentenced to one year. The cue agiinst William Smith was trit'J and the jury failing to agree was diecbarged. The vieiting attorneys ro far as your has been able to learo, are S. Van Winkle, Dinyille; J. W.

Jones, K. Ewell, Y'm. L. Brown, Loodor; Judge Golden, J. II.

Tinsley, John Disbman nnd D. Black, Birbour villi; Col. Clark, of Boonville, common-wealth' attorney. Speaking of the failure of justice in criminal cises the Courier Journal sayc Tuc difficulties are many First, twenty challenge are allowed to the accused and only five to the Slate, After these five are exhausted it is comparatively easy (o exclude intelligent or courageous men from service Beyond this the law requires a unanimous verdict; so it is possible for one man Io cause a disagreement in any ca-e Xext. when a violent crime has been done; when the whole community is shocked, the Slate permits a change of venue Yet when the Governor is cauvinced that a cer tain community has been terrorized and the authorities intimidated, he has no authority, of his own volition, aud on his own judgment, to send another judge into that district.

Theu comes the appeal, which, io most cise results in a new trial, so numerous nnd so fine spun have been tbe objec tions urged by the court of appeals against any rulirg looking to tho protection of etciely. Appetls in criminal cases should be refused, or if this eeeius too severe, then the grounds for a new trial or au appeal be clearly defined acd the esses should be very fowand exception al. These changes aie, we baMeve, esscn tial to a rigid punishmtnt of all criminals. Tj these changes must our people come at last. Tun reign of lawleisoess must cease Kentucky must vindicate her civilization.

Her good name is in jeopardy. Too long have we tolerated crime; content to say we are no worse than Ohio or Tennessee. But let us consider that we are not responsible for the preservation of order in any State but our own. Here we are responsible and wo should Bee to it that no men are sent to the Legislature who hold views it', variance with tbe good order of eociely. Madison Couniy.
