Speeding to Sudden Death ome people's idea of a "good time" is to travel Hirough space or over the highway in such a way as to court disaster and death. Even the speedway at Indianapolis has become a tame procedure. The chariot race between Messala and Ben Hur is no longer worthy of mention. You must travel by jet plane or no plane at all. It is regrettable but it is true that a lot of automobile drivers give little thought to traffic safety until they or persons they know become accident victims.

With hardly an exception all the fatalities on the highway are due to trying to see what is the most "satisfactory" road to the future existence. Traffic statistics makes dull reading for the average driver. This is too bad, because if more attention were paid to accident causes by the men and women who drive automobiles, there might be fewer news stories of the "sudden-death" type. In an effort to attract public interest to dry statistics the Travelers Insurance companies recently prepared a booklet containing cartoons based on grim analysis of traffic accident figures for 1948, The illustration folder was hit upon in the hope a bit of satire may succeed in the lessons of safety where sterner warnings have failed." In its analysis of accident causes, the booklet places speeding at the top of the list, by a wide margin. Speeding cars killed more than ten thousand persons last year, accounting for about 45 per cent of all highway fatalities.

Speeding injured nearly 340,000 other men, women and children. A particularly depressing thing is that the figures show that speeding accidents are increasing, despite the long and persisent efforts of police, traffic and safety authorities to educate drivers in safer driving ways. There were 80,120 more speeding casualities in 1948 than in 1947, and fast driving was a larger factor in traffic fatalities last year than in any year since invention of the automobile. The Tarvelers' booklet contains a comment well worth repeating here: "We cannot substantially improve the Nation's shameful traffic record until drivers make up their minds to stay within speed limits. Careful engineering, tight traffic laws and firm police work are necessary.

But the burden belongs to the driver. It is he who has deliberately driven too fast. It is he who must slow down!" Of course all of this has no reference to the racing in the middle of the night (when traffic is presumed to be light) by pebple who have this speed mania. This is not limited to any class of people or locality. Probably the most recent illustration of this "mania" took piece in California where a number of vehicles took part in the race and the police were hardly more then able to c'ispurse the culprits and able to arrest but few who could not evade arrest because their "speed car" got into trouble.
