New Burt Elevator Is One "Mass Of Concrete" Original But Elevator Facilities The buildings pictured above, and- familiar for years to Burt area residents arid farmers, show the original facilities of the Burt Co-Operative" Elevator Co. In addition to grain storage, these buildings house grinding equipment. The new monolithic concrete elevator structure arises lo Ihe rear of these buildings. The elevator structure shown on the left in the photograph will in the future be used as a feed-processing house. But From Top Of Elevator Took 11 Days And Nights Of Pouring Erection of a structure such as the new Burf elevator — a monolithic "single piece of concrete" —is a story in itself, with plenty •f "construction drama". Younglove Construction Co., of Sioux City, a specialist in the erection of such buildings, was general contractor for the elevator. The elevaior was started in early March of this year. After about a month of preliminary work and form construction, pouring of concrete began on April 19 at 1:00 p.m., and conlinued Without interruption for eleven days and nights. The concrete reached the top of the grain bin ianks at 6:30 a.m. on April 30. The head house, which is bonded to the tanks themselves, started up on May 23 and the lop was reached on May 26. In a monolithic type concrete structure such as this is, there are no seams or joints, for the concrete pouring, once started, never stops until the entire structure is up. 2,200 cubic yards of concrete— or 12,000 sacks of cement—went into the elevator. As the structure increased in height, men and forms went up with it, and mixed concrete was hoisted up from a special concrete batch plant set up on the grounds. If you point a camera at the town of Burt from the top of the grain bin tanks of the new elevator, this is the picture thai you will gel. A 'portion of the tank lop is shown in the foreground. This view ;s taken 119 feet from ground level. On a clear day, six other Kossuth towns can be plainly seen from this elevation. Congratulations !
