• %4 .•••JM ^sburfl ReQistef^Mail, Gdlesburg, 111, Wednesdoy, June 13, 1973 Bali's Topless Native Dress Gone, i But So Are Traffic Jams, Pollution By MURRAY J. BROWN UPI Travel Editor BALI, Indonesia , (UPI) Mention Bali and chances are that many Americans will Visualize a tropical island paradise of palm-fringed beaches kissed by atystal-cleari blue seas and of beautiful doe- eyed vromenwi^bariebreas^ Travel Topics Well, I don't want to be a spoil sport but that picture will have to be changed. The palms, beaches and seas are there and the women 1 of Bali are beautiful but, with .the exception of some of the more elderly who ignore 01 government-decreed ban oni what was deemed such an uncivilized practice they no longer appear in public with bare bosoms. OUR GUIDE SAID some Oifi the younger women still go bare above the waist inside the privacy of family community compounds or in the more isolated villages but cover up when strangers appear. We did see one young girl bathing nude in a stream in the interior but she hastily bent over and tamed hier back as soon as she spotted the tour bus. Incidentally, the (water was just above her knees. As one of the travel writers to our party put it, you could probably see more bare breasts in one topless joint in New York, Los Angeles or Sara Francisco than in all of Bali. The paradox was noted by guide Njoman Oka of Bali- tours who said: "As we in Bali get more 'civilized,' we-go West. You go Bast." FORTUNATELY, BALI has not gone too far towards the West as yet even though it long has been .the major tour ist destination in the chain of islands which comprise the Republic of Indonesia, stretching between Asia and Australia along the equator. There are no skyscrapers, even in .the capital city of iPasar because of the "Palm Tree Law" Which forbids buildings higher ten the tallest pailm. The lone exception, we were told, is the 10-story deluxe Inter-Oontinental Hotel Bali Beach at Sanur —•' where our group of travel writers stayed. It was financed by the Indonesian government. Traffic jams and pollution are just words here. Bicycles) remain the most popular mode of transportation and oxen- and/or-horse drawn carts still far outnumber motor vehicles; in town and country. And there are no smoke-belching industrial plants to poison the air. EVEN A BRIEF TOUR of this 90-mile-long 55-mile-wide island jusit east of Java oan be a memorable experience. It is a tranquil and scenic delight land its people are friendly and charming — happy, too, judging from the smiling faces. There are mountains and lakes, rice paddies and terraced f armliands, .tropical trees and fl-owers, sparkling white coral beaches, colorful clusters of thatched-roof villages,, and temples — 10,000 of them at the most recent count. Every village has at least one temple. In addition, there are countless shrines inside family compounds, along the roads, in the rice fields and practically everywhere else. And every shrine and temple we saw or visited had fresh offerings of rice, fruit or flowers to the gods. Religion plays a major role in the lives of the Balinese. Unlike the rest of Indonesia FULLER-CUT SLACKS FOR FATHER Father's Day June 17 More and more men are enjoying the comfort of jacket and slacks for the office—a trend welcomed by Levi's with their new Regent. Available in both knit and woven fabrics, it's k cut fuller for an easy fit all day long, stop In soon for pair or two. DOWNTOWN GALESBURG which is mainly Moslem, Bali has a religion of its own.. Known as Bali-Hindu, it is predominantly Hinduism with touches of Buddhism and Balinese culture. ALMOST EVERY DAY of our stay seemed to be some sort of festival with long lines of men in white pajama-type coat and pants carrying banners or beating gongs followed by women in sarongs bearing offerings to some temple. Young children marched in the procession, also. THie temples, with their exquisite carvings and other decorations, also serve as sites for the famous Balinese classical dance-dramas, such as the Barong, Legong and Ketchak. The vistor should try to see all three — arrangements can be made at hotel tour-guide desks. MOST FOREIGN visitors to Bali stay at the-, beachfronti hotels at Sanur or, Kuta, a few miles from Denpasai* and •the airport, which offer such modem conveniences as ato conditioning, pools, cocktail lounges, etc. European plan rates — no tnieials — run from about $12 to $30 daily for a double .room in main buildings or cottages, plus 21 per cent government tax and service charge. Modified American plans, which include two meals, are available. OVER FOR THE SECOND GREAT WEEK Evangelist Mike Brown Prom Kansas City, Mo.
