Nobel Peace Prize Winner Angell Dies CROYDON, England Sir Norman Angell, Nobel Peace Prize winner and onetime cowboy in the American west, died Saturday in a home for the aged following a brief illness, it was announced Sunday. He was 94. The colorful Sir Norman gained world fame with the publication in 1910 of his book "The Great Illusion," in which he argued that war damaged the victor as much as the vanquished. A failure at first, the book ultimately sold more than one million copies and was translated into more than 20 languages and dialects. "The Great Illusion" brought a storm of criticism and Sir Norman was denounced as unpatriotic.

But respect for his views grew following the First World War and he became the acknowledged champion of collective security. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in (1933. Sir Norman sought in his autobiography, "After All," published in 1952, to correct the Sir Norman impression created by "The Great Illusion" that he was a pacifist. He said that in 1914 he felt a war delayed might be a war prevented. But he said, in 1939 he had no doubts that it was right to fight Hitler.
