Ladies' Mite Society---Oyster Supper. ThoLntlies1 ite Society of the JI. E. Church, will give an Oyster Supper In the Lecture Room of the Church, on Tuesday Evening March 20th. The public tiro cordially invited.

By order of the I'rcsidenfcr' SALLIE McFADDEN, Sec'y. The noon train ran off the track neat Russell's Station, on Monday, and the engine had not been extricated up to Tuesday night, No damage was done by the accident. The "protracted meeting" at the M. E. Church in this place cloned with the commencement of the last Quarterly Meeting.

Cjiukcii. The members of this church have determined to refit and repair the church edifice, which is grer.tly iu need of renovation. To aid in the work, the Ladies of tho Mite Society will give an Oyster Supper in the basement of tho church, on next Tuesday evening. "Vc cannot doubt that our citizens will encourago them by a liberal patronage. states that during the past two mouths, over sixteen undrednew members have been added to the church within the bounds of his District. It has been one of the most remarkable revivals In the history of the Confer ence. IIiLLsnono' Female College. Tho Spring term of this Institution will ommence on tlie 4th of April. We are jleascd to learn that the prospects are very encouraging for a full attend ance, and that tho patrons and friends of the College express themselves well satisfied with its management thus far, under the auspices of tho new Presi dent.

A circular, giving a description of the College, tho courso of studies, plan of government, terms, and other nformation, has Just been issued for gratuitous distribution. It will be re membered that Judge Matthews two years ago appointed a new Board, com posed entirely of members of his own party, and that the party organ there' upon congratulated tho pcoplo on having a new Board of tluhilc men." Mr. Edwards having soon after removed from this county to the congenial political atmosphere of "old Democratic Butler," Profes sor Sams was reinstated in tho Board, so that it is now again composed of tho old members, Messrs. Sams, Herron and McKibben.

Three gen tlemen, better qualified for their re sponsible positions, could not proba bly bo found in tho county; and what ever may be the changes of politics, we hope it will bo long ere they" will be again displaced merely to gratify a narrow and intolerant party spirit. PAINT March 8, 1866. Mr. EniTon A description by An Observer," of an Exhibition giv en at Rainsboro, appeared in your last Issue. Tho maxim, "different standpoints give different views," appears to bo verified in this case, since other observers speak in less 'flattering terms of the exercises. 1 The writer, in alluding to a Decla mation, says 'it was delivered in a ery eloquent style;" also that "tl exercises wero earned on in goou order," and refers to tho reading of the School Taper as being "very interesting That may all bo true-, but I couldn't "see it," especially the 'interestincr" part of a paper full of egotism, nhd personalities, rather blunt and out of goixl taste for public read- tnc.

It was a kind of imitation of ra Chronicles," but was such a mixture of styles as to Ipso Its identity and be no style at all, except a low grade of literature, Lastly, tho teacher spoke In a "very manner." The writer Is not sufficiently explicit in his statement. It Is true in part, but does not give eomvlete idea of tho facts in the case. It teas apparently In a "feeling man ner," but those deep emotions were ev Idcntly experienced only by the speak er, novlsiblo signs were manifest ed by the audience. Why should they applaud a Decla. mation familiar to every school-boy a war speech, by a "peace man1 -one who declared tho war to bo a "fail uref" and during tho long and ardu ous struggle for tho llio or uie isation, wver eitereil the armyt Undor such circumstances I couldn't appreciate the force of the gentleman's argumenis, Tho object of that attempt is evi dently an exponent of tho policy many othom.

By such insidious vvilos many of theso samo "peace men" now seeking to ingratiate themselves into fellowship with thoso who have stood tho brunt of the war and saved our country in spite of them. Verily they ore "wolves in sheep's Mr. "Observer" baa a peculiar facul- i ty of making "good order" out of confusion and disorder. Others have a different idea of what constitutes "good order," slnco they have been diligently hunting up these boisterous charac ters, some of whom have been tried before 'Squire Ferguson and Others, it is hoped, will probably yet bo brought to Justice, That "matrimonial epidemic" spo ken of by "Fiuley" recently found sub jects in this township upon which to vent its rnge. Tho lovers, wishing to try their skill at strategy, refused to tell their best friends of the enterprise, thinking they would go to llillsboro, (which they were wont to do) get spliced, and surprise the "natives" by the announcement in the News.

Perhaps they hoped to get into tho good graces of tho Editor and get a puff. Imagine our surprise, (for the plan had leaked out) and no doubt their chagrin, when tho notice failed to appear. It was a tiuwvly match, for their days of grace as young folks had nearly expired. Nevertheless I presume they are greeted with numerous good wishes for their "conjugal felicity." SPECTATOR. From Dodson Tp.

a of are Dooson Tr. School No. 3. 12, 18G0'. The School House in this District lias been tho centre of interesting asso ciations during tho school term of six months past, The scholars have made satisfactory progress in their studies.

Discipline has been enforced without resorting to any severity of punishment, and good order has been preserved. Not only In schoirt hours, but in gojug to and returning from school, the children have been rctnarkalllb (with slight exception) for their good behavior and mannerly conduct. There are causes well understood here which make the labors of a Teacher in this District peculiarly onorous and arduous. Apprehensions were felt that the efficiency of tho School would be seriously if Dot fatally rtllectcd by the operation of these causes. Not only is the School a largo one, but perverse feelings wero to be conciliated and con Hicting opinions recoonciled, outside tho school-room.

The Teacher, Miss Lou. Robb, well understood tho situation of aud. proved equal to the occasion. And we aro now felicitating ourselves on the fact that the school has been a success triumphant. As time wore on the schollars be came better drilled, more studious and more correct In deportment.

Spelling matches were frequent in the evenings, at which times visitors were present in considerable numbers. Near the latter part of the term some of the older scholars started the idea of a Debating I Club, and forthwith one was organized. Already a number of subjects have been discussed Slavery, Intemperance, and sheep-killing dogs. Tho society is still in operation, including in its membership all who choose to participate in its debates. The last day of the School, Friday, tho Otli was set apart for a general festival.

Housekeepers of the neighborhood brought forward their baskets well stored with the "good things of this life." These, when brought to view anil arranged in a way to be pleasing to tho eye, reminded me of the temptations hich beset our Sax on ancestors before tho conquest of Great ISritaln. The scene which ensued wus like the assaults of one of our armies upon a rebel fort. At first tho light Infantry was led on, well trained, iger for the fray and "brave as Julius Ca-sar," but tho task was ton1 great for them, and after performing 'pro. of valor" they retired In good orc-r. Reinforcements were brought forward, and a second uienectual assault was made.

Three times, four several times, our forces charged upon that brave little fort before victory finally perched upon our banner. JiOiig the bravery of that great lay bo re- Every soldier.was' in the fight and every ono of them felt it'was glory enough! for one clay." Jt is not easy to do Justice In giving a description of this pleasant Festival. Friend gatherod around In little cir cles to discuss matters of mutual inter est. Smiling faces and cordial greet ings welcomed ono On all sides. The largo room was filled with tho hum of various voices, and echoed with i the laughter of many hearts.

Tho old drank a new draught from tho foun tain. of youth, and the young saw that though some were old In years, they still preserved some states of youthful affection, Each ono communicated tho sphoro of his delight to others, and the ties which ought to bind tho old, middle-aged aud young together were strengthened. And all this was right. Jf parents wish to control tho young and keep them within the pale of their influence, they must bring their life down to youthful feelings and inter. ests, and clothe it in forms "which will awaken their attention, and enlist their affections.

v. After tho dinner' was over songs wort sung by nmlo ami female voices. These" had a- soothing the company was well prepared to ten to sjieeches. Two addresses were made. One by Mr.

Ditty, on the Importance of Education, was an excellent address and well received. Modesty prevents me from saying any thing about the merits of the other, lie-cause It was delivered by your humble servant. A few affectionate, well chosen farewell words Ly tho Teacher, closed the exercises and festivities of the Jay, In conclusion, my experience as a School Director for two years past, sat isfies mo on oho point, In regard to which I feel able to speak with confi dence. A great benefit is secured to the School by tho frequent attendance of School Directors. Any Teacher who has the calling at heart will welcome the presence of any one who feels an interest in the prosperity of the school.

Many quiet and well-meaning people, who would gladly do some service to the community, but who shrink from a contest with the hydra-headed evils of the day after they have attained gigantic proportions, may find a conge nial field of usefulness by a frequent attendance upon Common Schools. Hero they may apply their Influence at the right time and right place, and assist directly or indirectly in giving a happy turn to tho thoughts and affections of young people, and aid in launching their boat on the vovago of life in the right direction. "Train up a child In the way he should co and when he is old ho will not depart therefrom." Modest pcoplo sometimes underrate their power and the impo tance of their Influence. Let them be encouraged. The Great Man who is to reform tho world is quiet and lowly in spirit, but earnest ana persevering not a noisy individual, not addicted to vain show, and not inspired by weak love of notoriety, nor by a lust A.

Mit. Kditok: After observation and iwmiry I am of the opinion that the Peach crop is entirely destroyed by the hard freezes; other fruits are, I suppose, uninjured. Jt is too early yet to judge with accuracy of the damage to the Wheat crop if any by winter killing. A proposition now In agitation among the citizens here to grade and pave tho road from Lexington to tho Depot, a distance of half a mile. $1400 is the amount required, and we ear nestly hope It may be raised.

Every sensible man who has traveled that road with a team in winter, will sub scribe something. The sum necessary to bo raised would be but a small amount to each person directly interested. A young colored man named Phil lips, who had been living near this place, dropped suddenly dead on the morning of the 4th.
