He was 85. Hearst was the last surviving son of the legendary newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Randolph Hearst was chairman of the family's media empire from 1973 to 1996. At the time his daughter was kidnaped, he was also editor and president of the San Francisco Examiner.

Throughout the kidnaping ordeal, Hearst left his mansion regularly to face the media and discuss the latest SLA demands. When the group demanded that the Hearsts give millions of dollars in food to California's poor, he headed up the People In Need giveaway program, pledging $2 million. It was then that, after feeling a lump in her left breast, Anita Arias immediately made an appointment when she received a letter advertising that the hospital's mammography van would be offering free mammograms at the Hewlett Library. There was some good news: the cancer was small. only 0.7 centimeters. But acquaintances told the San Francisco Chronicle, which the Hearst Corp. recently acquired in a deal that also involved selling off the storied Examiner, that Hearst often seemed down to earth.

"He was a very bright, thoughtful, caring guy," said William Coblentz, a lawyer and friend for many years. "He was self-effacing, devoid of prejudice, and he cared for people. He had a desire to listen, which a lot of people in his position do not have." Forbes estimated the privately held corporation's 1999 revenues to be $4.4 billion. The Harvard-educated Hearst was an executive for a range of Hearst newspapers, interrupting his career to serve as an Army pilot in World War II. He remained interested in the family's newspapers and was president of the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.

Shas' move proved decisive because the bill to dissolve parliament failed by a vote of 48 to 68. "The Shas leadership decided that it could not risk losing so many seats for Netanyahu's sake," said Yaron Ezrahi, a political science professor at Hebrew University. "They felt that Netanyahu might be bluffing in order to pressure them to dissolve the Knesset so Likud could win more seats." Shas leaders appealed to Netanyahu to change his mind. "There's no such thing as a deluxe election," said Knesset member Yitzhak Cohen. But if Netanyahu drops out, Shas would support Sharon, who holds a slight lead over Barak in most polls.

It was Sharon's visit on Sept. 28 to a Jerusalem shrine sacred to Muslims and Jews that provoked 11 weeks of violence in which nearly 330 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed. Netanyahu called on Likud to oppose the law allowing him to run. So the Likud opposed it, while Barak's Labor party voted in favor. Barak said he did not want to be blamed for keeping Netanyahu out of the race.

Netanyahu feared that if elections are held for prime minister alone, he would be left with the present splintered Knesset and would be unable to forge a stable coalition. "If general elections are not held." he said, "We will find ourselves going to elections again and again." Barak is hoping to clinch a peace deal with the Palestinians in the next month and use it as the centerpiece of his re-election campaign. In an effort to restart peace talks, senior Palestinian and Israeli negotiators are expected to hold separate talks today with U.S. mediators in Washington. Even if his gambit works and Barak manages to defeat Sharon, he could return to office confronting the same opposition he faces now in the Knesset.
