H. WARREN. Downing justly remarks i that the North American trees composiug the genu's Magnolia, Are certainly among the mosl splendid productions of the forests iu any temperate climate." As wo look upon this family of trees, witli their statelj trunks, their 'highly fragrant flowers, their large and elegant foliage, we will be ready to ad-. mil that there-is not 'a more gay and magni-cent family of deciduous trees in this extend ed world 'of ours With the exception of a lew'small shrubs or trees of China and the mountains of Central Asia, this family of splendid trees are ex- 'clusively North American. CUCUMBER MAGNOLIA.

This' noble tree is knawn in Ohio pnd most of the States of the' Union as the Cucumber tree from the fact that its fruit greatly resembles te garden cucumber. The leaves are oval, pubescent be- neal petals obovate. This jiobie forest tree, in the North-era and Middle JStates, occupies the place in point of naa-' jesfy and elevation of the large evergreen Magnvlia of the It is not found growing north of Lake Lno, but in the Middle, the Western and South western States it is met with. "Where, the soil is deep and fertile it rises up grandly to the height of seventy or eighty feet with a trunk three or four feet in diameter. The beautiful foliage with which this tree is clothed so richly during the summer sea- 6ou, is of a bluish green color on the upper surface The fruit, or cucumbers as they are generally called, is quite pret ty, of a reddish color, and have for ages been employed medic inally, being oteeped in liquor auu urautv uiuers io prevent ague. The feeds are berry like, hanging from the carpels by threads when vipe. The wood 'of this elegant tree is beautiful ana is employed to considerable extent for mechanical purposes.

The flowers are rich and showy, being about six inches in diameter, of a pale yellowish color, resembling -'very much the flowers ot the Tulip and are' slightly fragrant. They are easily raid- orl 1vnm tltacoorla U'liinli cfirtnM be sown as Boon as gathered iu autumn. Perhaps none of the Magnolia family are finer than this one when properly culti- ated; it will always rank high in the catalogao of ornamental trees When planted in a deep, rich soil, onsorne verdant lawn, where it enjoys the advantages of proper culture, it will soon develop its superior excellencies, and present an object ol unrivalled interest and majesty. It possesses its charms during every season ol the rollingyear.
