The little lefty took over after a scoreless first half and ran 16 yards for one touchdown and set up a 2-yard touchdown plunge by halfback Larry Smith in the 3rd period.

Florida's scores came only two minutes apart. Eckdahl gained 74 yards in 11 carries. The Illinois rushing defense, which was second in the Big Ten last year and held the Gators to 22 yards on the ground in the first half, melted in the 100-degree temperatures in the last half. The Gators took the second half kickoff and marched 7S yards on the passing and running of Eckdall. The drive, capped by Smith's plunge, included a disputed pass interference penalty which gave Florida a first down on the Illinois 2C yard line.

Wayne Barfield added the first of two extra points. Less than two minutes later, Florida defender Guy McPheny gobbled up an Illinois fumble by halfback Ron Bess on the Illinois 16 yard line. On the next play, Eckdahl started around left end, cut back over tackle and went in untouched to score. Illinois' only scoring threat came when the Mini drove to the Florida 10 yard line in the second quarter. But quarterback Bob Naponic was thrown for a 12 yard loss and Dan McKissic missed a 39 yard field goal attempt.

Barfield also missed a 40 yard try in the first half.
