ra SECTION LIFE ONLINE Music Scene H3 TRAVEL Art & Theater 115 MUSIC SCENE 3 ART & THEATER 4 CROSSWORD 6 CALENDAR 7 TRAVEL 12 Monster-sized 21 Cinemas opens with a roar By Donald Munro Like a i neigh spark roar THE FRESNO BEE ike a pant lizard stomping its way into the neighborhood Edwards Cinemas opens its zparklingOew Fresno theater Tuesday with a Hie summer's most hyped movie “Godzilla” will be playing on a whopping Fresno Stadium 21 Cinemas To put that in perspective: The explosive hit “Independence Day” which opened two years ago played on 10 screens in the FVesno-Clovis area ‘Titanic" which far outpaced “Independence Day” at the box office Gait piled up its Btill-growing record take over a matter of months not in a few weekends like many summer releases) played at its peak on five screens Part of “Godzilla’s screen overload comes from the overly hyped nature of the film itself In addition to the 12 Edwards screens “Godzilla” will also play on four screens at United Artists’ Broadway Fane two third of the 69 screens in the area But even if it weren’t for “Godzilla’s” monster appetite for screens it’s dear that Edwards will dramatically change the Valle’s movie scene This is a theater with an attitude Please see Cinemas Page H2 On Tuesday the new Edwards Fresno Stadium 21 Cinemas will have its grand opening The complex will be the largest in Fresno It boasts many innovations for moviegoers among them are stadium-style seat automated ticketin booths and state-of-the art acoustics The sound system All of the 21 cinema auditoriums are equipped with the latest in digital sound systems including Dolby Digital digital theater sound (DTS) and SDDS built in to giant wall-to-wall curved movie screens Left right speakers: Subwoofer reverberating sound: Plays musical score some sound Produces deep booming sound effects and dialogue from characters effects such as a dinosaur stomp seen near edges of screen Surround-sound speakers: Produces sound effects such as distant thunder simulates audio movement such as a passing Jet and also may play music The projection room A system with horizontal film discs called platters can serve two cinemas at a time The film is looped from one that the audience can literally feel Center speakers: Produces most of the dialogue
