The two-hour program, transmitted by the new United Network was a lone varietv show with a number of stars appear ing in the resort city. There was Milton Berle at his best wise cracking and insulting the au dience. Martin and Rossi turned up for a short comedy appearance and there were sincers Abby Lane and Sara Vaughan.

Dana was poised in his open ing monologue, and generally the show moved along smoothly. To its credit, it bears not the slightest resemblance to the other two late evening programs. But the viewer wonders how Dana and his helpers can pull together such an elaborate program five nights a week. The first program was inter esting, ambitious and promises to interest a lot of viewers. Comebacks Noted For Fall TV Comebacks are the hallmark of the fall network schedules.

Among the familiar faces returning in weekly series of their own are Jerry Lewis, Raymond Burr, Carol Burnett, Eve Ar- den, Danny Thomas, Walter Brennan at age 73, Dennis Weaver, Chuck Connors and Jerry Van Dyke, Jay North and Sally Field. Police and private investigators, who have fallen from network grace in recent seasons, make a modest resurgence in the fall when there'll be a total of six such series. Situation comedies, TV's reliable staple, is slowly waning in importance with only 21 such as compared to 29 last season. Westerns simply hold their own, a total of eleven.
