We, the undersigned, on behalf of the Ladies of St. Mary's Altar Society, beg leave to return our most sincere thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the good and generous people of Hillsboro, who enabled us to realize tho handsome sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, exclusive of expenses, at the Supper given- by our poor but humble efforts. Wo might mention some honorable names nnd worthy families, bat they may rest assured the aid font us and tho charity manifested at the Court House, August 1857, rball novor bo forgotten. KATE McGLINCV, Benton's Abridgement of the Debates of Congress. The Agent for this great national work, Mr. J. R. Cunningham, is now here, soliciting subscriptions.

Tho do-sign of tho work is to condense into convenient compass the substance of all the debates in Congress from 1789 to 1856. Tho qualifications of the distinguished author, Thomas II. Benton, for the arduous task of compiling such a work, are too well known to require mention. Thcro is no doubt that it will be an almost hi valuable compendium of tie political history of our country. It is to bo published large volumes of 750 pages each, at 83 a volume, bound in cloth, 83.50 in law sheep, Si in mo rocco, and 84.50 in half calf extra.

Three volumes are now ready for delivery, and a fourth will be ready beforo tho closo of the year, after which tho volumes will be issued regularly every two or three months. Subscriptions may be left with Dr. W. It. Smith, who will deliver the volumes to subscribers this place and vicinity.

Republican County Convention. Pursuant to notice the delegates from the soveral townships met at the Court Ilouso, on Hatimlay, August 15th, and organised by appointing JOHN LUCAS Chairman, and Irion ana J. It. Boa RDM AN Secretaries. The townships being called, the following gontlcmen presented their cre dentials and took their cats as dele gates: Bruthcmk E.

Boardman was appointed to fill the vacancy. On motion of S. Irion, Wm. O. Col lins was unanimously nominated fur Representative by acclamation.

On motion, John M. Bap.rt.re was unanimously nominated for Probate Judge. On motion, G. F. Stevens was unanimously nominated for Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas.

Win. P. Hughcyof Fairfield, Wm. Long of Whiteoak, Wm. H.

Griffiths of Marshall, aud Joel Mathews, of Clay, were put in nomination for Sheriff. The first ballot resultod, Hughey 15, Griffiths 7, Long 5, Mathews 3. No one having a majority of all the votes cast, tho two lowest candidates were dropped, and the second ballot stood, Hughey 18, Griffiths 10. On motion, Mr. Hughey 's nomination was made unanimous.

On motion of J. H. Mullcnix, J. II. IloTHRocrc was unanimously nominated for Prosecuting Attorney.

james j.1111 ana Jos. Marlay were put in nomination for Treasurer. On the first ballot the vote stood, Dill 23, Marlay 5, scattering 2. James Dill was then unanimously declared the nominee. R.

R. Allen, C. J. Vanpelt, W. C.

Winter, and R. W. Spargur, were presented as candidates for Recorder- On the 1st ballot, Vanpelt received 18 votes, Spargur.7, Winter 2, Allen 1. C. J.

Vanpelt was then uuanimously nominated. Benjamin Conard, Wm. Town, John Ilaigh, and Gerard Ladd, were put in nomination for Commissioner. The 1st ballot resulted, Ilaigh 11, Conard 7, Town Ladd 3, Brow 1 On motion, all but the two highest candidates were dropped, and the second ballot tood. Conard 17, Haighll.

On motion, Mr. Conard's nomination was made unanimous. On motion, John Litas was unanimously nominated for Infirmary Director, and Damfl Vaswi.nklk for Coroner. Tho nomination:) Icing completed, tho doors were thrown open to the public, and on motion of S. Irion, Thomas Berkvman, was invited to address the Convention, which he proceeded to do in a most eloquent nnd appropriate manner, briefly netting forth the objocts of the Republican party, ttnd the claims of the ticket just nominated to tho support of the people.

At the close of his remarks, Wm. O. Collins, was called for, and rei ponded briefly, returning his thanks for the honor conferred upon lam, and promising his best exertions, consistent with the deiuauds of his professional duties, for the success of the Republi can cause in tho coming contest.
