Find more tips for writing notes of condolence at Legacy.com/bellinghamherald Karl Kegham Kutnerian Kegham "Karl" Kutnerian passed away peacefully in Woodburn, Oregon, the home of his daughter, on October 26, 2018. He was 92. Born in Cairo, Egypt, to Armenian parents, Kegham worked in his father's pharmacy at a very young age, carrying out every aspect of the business when called upon to do so.

In his spare time he hunted with a slingshot, fished, swam, and flirted with girls. He was a gifted artist, an accomplished classical violinist, and a serious competitor in Track Field, the latter of which qualified him to compete for Egypt in the 1948 Olympics. Dreams of being an Olympian had to be set aside however, when after two years of waiting, his student visa had been approved by the USA to come to America to study medicine. Kegham arrived at Ellis Island on November 7, 1947, whereupon he chose to Anglicize his first name henceforth becoming known as Karl K. Kutnerian.

Learning English on the fly, Karl immediately enrolled at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, where he completed his undergraduate coursework and met his future wife, Margaret Evans, who was studying to become a Medical Technologist at the same school. Karl graduated with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry alongside Margaret in June of 1956 and they were married shortly thereafter. Margaret managed cystic fibrosis research at Babies Children's Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, to help facilitate Karl's pursuit of medicine at Case Western Reserve. In 1960, Karl earned his degree in Internal Medicine and, following a residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital, specialized in Oncology Hematology.

In 1964, Karl and Margaret packed up their 120 lb. black German Shepherd "Thor" and 2 y.o. daughter Karyn and drove 2300 miles from Detroit, MI, to Bellingham, WA, to join Drs. Eve Larson John Arnold in a small practice on street in the Bellingham Medical Center (BMC). Karl (aka "Dr.

was the sole Oncologist in Whatcom County for 11 years, treating everyone from pediatrics to geriatrics. With the addition of Grant Deger in 1972, the 3-doctor practice grew to four and "Consultants in Medicine" (CIM) was born. The practice would move from BMC to Chestnut Medical Center and eventually out to Cordata over a 20-year period of time. During Dr. K's 28 year practice as a Physician and Oncologist in Whatcom County, he was especially known for his deep compassion for, and thorough care of, his patients and their families.

While Dr. retired in 1992, his interest in the community remained, and he attended Tumor Board every Tuesday up until the end of 2017. In addition to serving as Chief of Staff at both St. Joseph's and St. Luke's Hospitals, Karl was an active member of St.

Paul's Episcopal Church and the St. Luke's Foundation. He leaves behind his daughter, Karyn Kutnerian, of Woodburn, Oregon, and granddaughter Amy Margaret Kutnerian, of Corvallis, Oregon; sister Armenough and family in Florida, and a number of Kutnerian cousins in Fresno, CA. Services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bellingham with reception to follow.
