Walter; HEATn OF WILLIAM SAEGF.ll. William Saeger, one of Allentowu's most highly esteemed, oldest nnd bent known citizens, died on Friday evening last at the home of his son, Jacob H. Sne-ger, at the age of Sti, after nn illness of about four weeks with disorders originating from cold. He was a gentleman well nu I favorably known iu most sections of the county, nud hosts of friends nnd admirers lament his passing away, even though he hnd long passed the scriptural nge of three score nnd teu. His life was well spent, nnd his good works were ninny.

He was an honest and honorable man, conscientious and faithful in the discharge of every duty. He met every responsibility and performed every obligation to the best of his ability always, doing it willingly nnd cheerfully. His was a beautifully well developed Christian chnracter, nud the example of his life is worthy of emulation by others. He was descendant in tho third generation from Christian Sueger, who emigrated from Germany to America nud settled in what is now North Whitehall. He left three sons, Nicholas, Jacob and Daniel.

Jacob was born in 1774, was an enterprising farmer, nud married Margaret Mickley. Eight children were born to them, Sarah, Catharine, Ann, Chnrles, William, Abigail, Mary nnd Kebecca. The subject of this sketch was one of them. The only survivor of the family is Rebecca, the wife of Henry Weinsheimer, residing at Fifth and Walnut streets, nnd now seventy-seven years of nge. The late deceased was born in North Whitehnll September 4, 1806.

When he was ten ye.irs old his father moved to Allentown, and he was given a liberal education for those days in a private school. His father and nncle, Daniel, erected a mill nud engaged iu mercantile pursuits. William Sneger was a clerk in their employ, and, upon attaining manhood, opened a general Btore where the Central K. It. Station now stands in East Allentown.

He did a big business with the canal boatmen, ninking additions and extensions, nud becoming nu extensive dealer in grain, manufacturer of lumber, owner of timber tracts, and farmer and miller on a large scale. Mr. Saegcr became identified with the Allentown Nati mul Brink as one of its first board of directors. Judge Jacob Dillinger was the first President. Upon his death November 1, 1861, Mr.

Sneger was elected his successor in the office, and wnB the first incumbent of tho position under the national bank organization. He resigned August 1, 1833, nnd since then lived retired. His administration at the bank was characterized by rare ability. He maunged the affairs of the institution carefully, prudently and with wise sagacity. Conservatism, a keen practical knowledge of financial affairs, strict integrity, fairness in dealings, and tactful hnndling, mnrked his presidency.

He wns succeeded by Esnias ltehrig, upon whose death C. W. Cooper wns promoted to the presidency. Mr. Cooper's death led to the elevation of Robert a two story frame kitchen attached.

Seized and taken in execution as the property of J. Moore and Christian Hohl. toniny, It'ttrm pntviit lor winch were issued to liim iu Jnno IMU. The invention in nn entirely new iljmrtiiro" iu tbo rtiHiincr of coupling cnra. It P(itmiMln of iiiiproviMiuiits npnlicnble to existing Inilwuy cmrn lmving piu mul link conplingR whereby tlio mum' iiru rimilcreil niitotuatio in coupling nnil uncoupling without nncr'Saitiitincr the ponsing of truiniiinn between tho rnr.

The invention rosin in the motlioil of olnvatinx nnd lowering the coupling piuH. Kneli pin i pivotii'iilly connected nt Uh upper finl with tho front euil of a bur the rent unit of whieh in pivoted to ft stiitionnry vorti-cnl brocket tUoil to the draw bend. When the Imr in rniHed the iiiu in out of connection with the link, mul when lowered the pin enters the link mid oouph's the curs. Tho bur in mniiitnined iu its ('limited position ly toggle-joint the upper inemlier of vi hii'h in pivoted to it, nud the lower member pivoted to the draw bend, or riitber. fixed pnrt thereon.

Tlio two members of the togule-joint are connected by knuckle-joint. bonding or breiiking the Joint between the two togglo members tho bur will drop the coupling pin. All thil i effected nutoiiinticnlly by the entrance, of the coupling link into the draw head, which has its coupling pin slevated. The lower toggle member constitutes itself a lever, sines it is provided with it downwardly extending extension or tnil below its pivot. To this extension is pivoted nnd suspended bv knuckle-joint a pawl.

Thii pawl i free nt nil times to swing forward on its pivot, but cunnot swing backwnrd beyond a vertical plnne when the bnr is rnised. When the ponplinu piu enters tho draw hend it encounters the pnwl, which in then locntod within the chamber of the drnwhimd, thus forcing tho pawl and the lower burgle member to swing bnokwnrds on the pivot, nnd conseiine ntly breaking the Joint between the two toggle members and allowing the coupling piu to drop into the link. In order to uunmple it it ouly nece8nry to lift the bnr which runs along the cars. This can conveniently be done by a bail extending benenth the bar, said bail being enrried by rotary shaft extending to the sides of tho car and Loving operating liandles. If when the uncoupling is effected the pnwl comes in front of the end of the link it will not interfere with the withdrnwal of the link, since the pawl will swing forward nud out of the wav.

The invention in beyond doubt the best devised of the 8000 couplers heretofore patented, ninceit will always do all that is claimed for it. Mr. Front, has a little workshop nt and one day lust week George II. Myers, of Itothle-hetn. and Samuel Thomas, of visited Lis place for examining the model of the coupler.

John Frit, of the Itethlehem Iron Compnny, was the snme dny, but was detained by some visiting government inspectors from Washington. Mr. Front, has in bis shop two large iron draw-heads of car ready furnished with full size coupler. The drnwhends are fastened on little wooden trucks which run on track. They enn moved backwards and forwards, thereby showing the self -coupler as it will actually nppenr and operate when on the cars.

For ninny years paBt inventors hnve been nt work on devises for coupling enrs automatically, thus to economize labor, Sromote convenience, nnd render railroad ncci-ents less probable than uuder the now system of coupling, and the invention just pntented by Mr. Frnutz, will, it is certain, fully meet the desired want. The patent is owned jointly by Mr. Frnutz, the inventor, nnd Mr. Lewis (Juttcntag, his money liaeker.

V. W. Wenver. nn enterprising young vrituimnn. idetilitied with the iron business, tins tit ken charge if their interests, nnd is exhibiting tho invention to capitalists with view of erecting Inrge works for tho mniiufnctnre of the couplers, liy their use on trnins any number of cars can bfl coupled together without the nid of a brnke-nian ana nm uncoupled.

The coupler enn be used on nn kind of railroad cars. Two hundred cars can boconpled or uncoupled in a moment, and when wo say this it is snlhcient to show that the invention an important one in the matter operating railroads, nnd that it is destined to save a great ninny lives, ns trainmen do not come in contact with O.n cars while coupling. we hope the coupler will soon come in general use on all the railroads iu the Anything which will reduce the number of accidents anil add to the safutv of the traveling public is of interest to the people of the country. In lSKl, as is shown by stntwtirs. atttt trnitimen were killed, 7,841 Injnred while coupling cars, nnd 547 killed ami injured by fulling from the cars, making a total of 03T killed nnd injnred railroad brnkemen.

It is estimnted tlint the chance of dying natural deaths nmong brakemon is but one in Ave. President Harrison in three of his nies-snges called attention to the frightful loss of life in this hazardous employment, nud ns one of the Inst nets of his administration sigued a bill pnssed 1y Congress which provides for nutomntio couplers nnd continuous nir brakes, nu net thnt will nerve greatly to reduco the sacrifice of human life. 804 HAMILTON ALLENTOWN, PA. xne report oi tue ixmnty Auditors lor was was men open court.
