The new ones will be Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," Wolf-Ferrari's "Secret of Suzanne" and Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors." The repeats will be Menotti's "Labyrinth" and Bach's "St. Matthew Passion." It may seem strange to include "Amohl" among the new ones, since NBC has aired it 13 times, but this will be a completely new production, new performers and prepared this time in color. "Labyrinth" will be seen first, on Nov. 24; "Amahl" on Dec. 25. —Jack Gaver Don Hastings of "As the World Turns" toured in "Life With Father" and later, in 1944, made his Broadway bow In "1 Remember Mama." 1 :30 The Doctors. 2:O0 Loretta Young. • 2:30 You Don't Say 3:00 Mutch Game. 3.25 NBC News. 3 30 Make Room tot Daddy. 4 00 Captain Jinks 5:00 Huckelberrv Hound. 6:30 Huntley-Brinkley. 6XH) Loc i New*. 6:10 Weather 6:15 Sports. • 6:30 Monday Night at the Movies: "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing." 8:30 Art Linkletter Show. 9:00 The Loyal Opposition. «:30 Dragnet: "Big Bird" 10:00 Harrison ana thf N*w#. 10:15 Weather- 10:20 Gordon Joyner on Sports, • 10:30 TonUht Show. 13 $0 JEvtiunj Meditation. M*kt Room lor P&44y* president of the ABC-TV network, a position he had held without the title for^the previous year. Now that the programs for the new television season are pretty well locked in, we can get some idea of what Moore meant when he described ABC's "boldest, I beginning Sept. 24. perhaps most closely identified 'The Untouchables," "Hawaiian Eye," and "Naked City." But it is keeping such perennials as "Wagon Train" and "Ben Casey." ABC trots out its new programming the week of Sept. 15. A weekly feature will be a two-hour variety show starring Jerry Lewis which begins on Sept. 21. Newcomers to weekly television this season will be Danny Kaye and Judy Garland, whose new variety shows start on Sept. 29 and Sept. 25, respectively, on CBS. Richard Boone undertakes an ambitious project as star of a weekly repertory show on NBC *• most direct challenge for leadership ever made in our medium." The network's programming has been drastically revised, certainly, but the biggest single news item is that the "Voice of Firestone" program will be replaced on Sunday evenings by the first big-money quiz show since the cheating scandals of 1959. It's called 4 100 Grand" after its maximum prize, and it pits amateur experts against professionals, and it sounds about as intellectual as "The $64,000 Question. * • * FOK THE PAST FIVE YEARS or so ABC-TV's effort to gain a larger share of television audiences and revenue- has resulted r in a gradual downgrading of program quality on all three major networks. Recent scrutiny of programming by the Federal Communications Com mission— and the frequent criticism of former Commissioner Newton N. Minow—did to some extent result in a greater emphasis on, news and public shows. But drama and entertainment showed little qualitative improvement. Now ABC is pitching out the programs with which it has been 4:00 Captain Jinks 5:00 Quick Draw McGraw. 5:30 Huntley-Brinkley. 6:00 Local News 6:10 WedtheT 6:15 Sports. 1:25 NBC News. •6:30 Laramie "The Fugitives." •7:30 Empire "The Convention." g:30 Dick Powell Theater; "Thunder in a Forgotten Town." 9:30 Chet Huntley Reporting: "A Chance to Achieve. 10:00 Harrison and th«- News. 10:15 Weather 10:20 Gordon Joyner on Sport** •10:30 Tonight Show. 12.-00 EveningMeditaUoa. -Denote* Colorcast. CBS on Sept. 2 expanded its five- days-a-week news broadcast with Walter Cronkite to a half-hour at 6:30 p.m., Eastern time Next Monday NBC does the same thing for Chet Huntley and David Brinkley, puttinng them in the 7 o'clock time slot. But if the two networks appear to be placing more emphasis on news, they are compensating by presenting fewer special news programs, or at least that's the way it looks at this time. Both the individual Huntley and Brinkley shows will be shelved by NBC, and CBS is dropping "Eye Witness" for entertainment. * * * YET TO BE SCHEDULED is the second in the "Town Meeting of the World" series, but CBS promises that this will be a quarterly feature. The first one, in which former President Eisenhower participated, along with Lord Avon, Jean Monnet, and Heinrich von Brentano, was enthusiastically received despite momentary losses of both sound and picture. One special bound to capture a huge audience is the CBS presentation of "Elizabeth Taylor in London" on Oct. 6. Perhaps the fact that the critics are already touting this one as the blockbuster of the new season tells all that really needs to be told about the season itself. JOKY SIGNED HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Victor Jory, making the rounds of guest spots on various television series, has signed for a starring role in the new "Temple Houston" show which co-stars Jeffrey Hunter and Jack Elam.
