Sew Your Own Geraldine Gleason Chutuk sits at her sewing machine working on one of her latest projects while her impish son Mark peeks around the balustrade. She is working on a shower curtain for the family's beach cottage. The same bright floral print has been used in three adjoining rooms to unify the living area and add a sense of spaciousness. Sewing Is An LOS ANGELES Pretty Geraldine Gleason Chutuk, daughter of comedian Jackie Gleason and wife of top California talent executive John S. Chutuk, rides the glittering merry-go-round of Hollywood nightlife.

In addition, she masterminds the running of her spacious home in Los Angeles, where she lives with husband Jack and their elfin kindergarten son, Mark. Being on-the-go and absorbed in a variety of social, cultural and charitable activities necessitates a wardrobe for Geri. How does she handle the round-the-clock demands on her clothes life? She easily turns out her own at the start of each season. Geri Chutuk keeps her machine handy in a sunlit corner of her terra cotta-floored kitchen, surrounded by curvy art-nouveau wrought iron chairs and clusters of the Chutuk's favorite plants palms and tropical hanging foliage. is a creative adventure," says Geri.

"By sewing for myself, I find that 1 can be something of a designer. I like to mix different patterns the skkt from one designer and the top from another. For example, if a particular look is right for me. I can interpret it a thousand ways and each time it will look different, but right. It gives me the happy feeling of always having just the right thing to wear whether going to a Hollywood premiere, entertaining at home, stopping at a restaurant or gallery opening, or even going to a sporting event.

For all these occasions. I previously combed the stores, finding shopping tedious and compromising. Daytime life in California is casual. Geri usually wears pants which before making them herself she had a hard time buying without numerous alterations. And nightlife in Los Angeles is often much more formal than in New York or other Eastern cities, meaning cocktail parties and small dinners in Los Angeles require a special after-dark wardrobe.

look of finely proportioned and often imported accessories appeals to me, and sewing myself is a great help in defraying their expense. It allows me to have just what 1 like from the imaginative boutiques in the Los Angeles area." Geri feels that accessories in the wardrobe are as important as accessories in home furnishings and should harmonize completely. For the Chutuks' small, easy- beach house. Geri selected a sunny floral printed fabric and used it for slipcovers and accessories in three adjoining rooms. The decorator effect unifies the main living area of the house and makes each room seem larger.

Out of a piece of leftover fabric, she made a wide tie for her father for Day. interests me enormously now, says striking chestnut-haired Geri, working with leather and organic materials to produce wide belts, fringed bags, and other one-of-a-kind accessories. The Sedalia Democrat, Tuesday, August omen Air Brushing Cures Problems By AP Newsfeatures When vacation time calls for a vacation from rollers, clips, nets and setting lotions, the new art of "air-brushing" keeps lodes and locks lovely and saves time for sun and fun. Indoors, done with a hand dryer and outside it just takes fresh air. After shampooing, brush wet hair (gently, so as not to stretch it out of shape) to unsnarl and fluff until only slightly damp.

An oval or professional style brush the over-all grooming type is best for this job. One small section at a time, hair is brushed underneath to halfway down the section and. with brush in place, held up to let air blow freely through the strands. Then brushing continues to the ends, which can be swirled around the fingers, under or out. A slim- style teasing brush, designed for detailed shaping, is best for this.

After two or three sections are air-brushed, combined and rebrushed the same way together. Then a new section is tackled and, finally, all the hair is groomed sleekly into place, again with oval or professional-type brush For section-by-section brushing, these are the recommended brushes for each hair type: Half-round: semi-circular with widely flared bristles for medium or long hair, particularly if thick, flare: six to seven rows of tufts, for curly or wavy hair, five-row: narrow brush with tufts set in very little flare, for styling, arranging, touch-up and wig care important to keep hairbrushes sparkling clean for best results. Hair Styles Change For Fall Romantic Elegance Coiffures This new coiffure, left, is a beautiful people look of quality, highly feminine and ladylike, a lovely example of the look of gentle elegance that will set foil fashion trends. The hair sweeps off the forehead with elegant simplicity, still giving the face a frame of softness, and retains the small head look that is so important for fall coiffures. From a slight rise at the crown, the polished hair continues to sweep down toward the nape where billowing waves hug the neckline.

In the style at right, the hair moves forward to form a light and airy pouf that turns into a bang. At the crown, another pouf is held high with a postiche braid, and hair at the back and sides is molded into softly sweeping curves.
