The Fresno Bee Friday October 16 1992 F5 Weekend Concert fans deserve break after work Cristlna Saruiegufs talk show is a daily staple on Channel 21 Local connections among the musicians: guitarist Don Kirkpatrick bassist John Davis and keyboardist-horn player Maia Sharp daughter) Sharp and Brooks will bring their new band to Hanford on Nov 14 opening for country singer Sammy Kershaw Fresno rock band Supreme Love Gods has a new self-titled release on Def American Records Eric Dansby Thomas Dew Tommy Joy and John Wilson wrote mixed and produced toe album themselves The boys will celebrate their release at a private party Sunday at the Wild Blue Leslie Letven married to Wild Bill Bixler will perform on Saturday at the Tower District dub saxophone and keyboards and joined by ex-Fres-nans Lou Pardini Phil Wimer Ranty Sharp Sharon Bays and Don Kirkpatrick as well as a number of Los Angeles players Letven will perform on Saturday at toe Wild Blue Sharp who has been a songwriter and producer (Restless Heart and Exile) for the past few years is back in the performing saddle He and singer Karen Brooks have a new album out on Mercury Records Another It received a favorable review in the current issue of People magazine and any seat not claimed by say 7:15 or 7:20 could be open to walk-ups another simpler idea: Go back to the poliqy of 6 and 8 pm performances every night That way 10000 people could see an artist and working folks should be able to get to the 8 pm show on time There are drawbacks in that plan too It would eliminate some performers who wont play two shows Since the fair relaxed its insistence on two shows it has been able to attract such acta as Reba McEntire Linda Ron-stadt Dwight Yoakam Crosby Stills Nash and tbs Doome Brothers in recent years And performers rive shorter shows when they do two in a night So you get more people and leas music Ia that a fair trade-off? So the solution is there is no perfect solution But you've got to give up something to offer free entertainment for as many fann as possible like to hear from readers Is the current fair entertainment system working? What ideas do you have to make it better? Should the fair charge a concert foe and reserve seats? Should it insist on two shows? Let me know what you think The Big FVeano Fair has riven us a lot of good music in the past several years and like to see that continue in the smoothest moat user-friendly manner possible Out of the studio New from the record labels: Leslie it on Sin-Drome Records Part of the Wild Blue management team with husband Bill Bixler Letven croons in a pop-jazz style mostly on BongB she wrote with Bixler Her husband "Around Town' appears regularly In weekend Ken Ftobison Is a Bee staff A ET MASTRANTO 1 0 REBECCA MILLE 1 KLIN A RY 1 KEVIN: By Lanny Larson The Fresno Bee KFTV Channel 21 combines its 20th anniversary celebration Saturday with a fund-raising dinner for an organization that promotes Hispanic arts symbolizing the connection with the Valley Hispanic community On Sept 20 1972 Channel 21 became the first Span-ish-language TV station simulcasting programs from Los KMEX The station had offices in Hanford but no atudia That changed the following April Studios were erected in Hanford and Channel 21 began producing its own shows in addition to airing the KMEX lineup The station established a nightly local newscast 19 years ago and installed Pedro Santos formerly of KGST radio as anchor still on "Noticias 21" now with Norma Roque and has been continuously anchoring his principal newscast longer than any other Fresno TV newscaster In addition to its weeknight newscast Channel 21 produces "Arriba Valle Central a live news and variety show hosted by Daniel Rodrigues and Lupita Lo-meli at 7 ajn Monday-Friday The Univision network supplies Channel 21 with popular talk comedy how-to sports (especially soccer) and news programs plus novelas serial dramas that run day and evening "Sabado Gigante" a variety and game show at 7 pm Saturday is the highest-rated program It has made a star of host Mario Kreutzberger popularly known as TV Guide described the show as world's most popular television Univision also is the place where Americana first saw Cristina Sarulegui and Jackie NespraL is a daytime talk show (4 pjn Monday-Friday) whose appeal led to a tryout of an English-language on Ghawnd 24 and other stations last summer Xuxa is the driving force behind "El Show de Xuxa" a entertainment program broadcast at 10 am Saturday and Sunday on Channel 2L The Brazilian superstar also will be seen next foil in a syndicated English version of her show anchoring abilities on "Noticias Mae" the week- songs ABOUND TOWN A letter from reader Tony Gul-lickson which ran in Spotlight complained that working folks those who work a 9-5 shift get into the concerts at the Big Fresno Fair because the Paul Paul Theater is full by the time they get to the fairground OK we all know that life is not fair Yet Gullickaon brings up a legitimate gripe that has caused some music lovers to stay home rather than pay the price to see their favorite artist at the fair Yes the Paul Paul Theater entertainment is free monetarily But it costs a lot in terms of time and hassle to see a popular act The theater was filled at 6 pm for Dwight 730 concert Yet there were plenty of seats 30 minutes before Hal Ket-chum and BeBe and CeCe Win-ana began their 6 pan shows Some acts dearty are more popular than others Avid fans line up at the theater gates by noon for many of the more popular shows and doors open at 4:30 pan three hours before a 730 show Am I the only me who thinks a bit crazy to ait for five or six hours in the hot sun to catch a good seat for a concert? On the other hand people wait all night to buy tickets to see Van Hum and Garth Brooks Which brings up my radical idea of the week: why not Bell for $1 or $2 (or give away) advance tickets for the 7:30 pan shows at the fair with assigned Beating? Here are the reasons to try it: Since the one-show-only acts are the most popular and only half as many people can get in the demand is greater Linea would gather when tickets became available (say three weeks before the fair) rather than at show time bo crowd control at the foir would not be impacted the way it is now People who cant get to the fairground until after work could be assured of getting into the show if they had an advance ticket No one would have to sit on hot metal benches for three hours to wait for their favorite performer to take the stage There are drawbacks of course There would be a coat to print up tickets Where would they be distributed? It would mean two tripe one to buy a ticket one to see the show Ushers would be needed to show people to their seats And what about no-shows? But those inconveniences might be mitigated by the convenience at show time Doors could open an hour before the show ONE OF iNTirn 1 1 KFnrs (Channel 21) 20th anniversary FtmdnMng dbvwr to benefit Arts Americas Bagina rt 7 pm Saturday Fresno MetropoMm Museum Tickets: $60 Information: 266-2623 day news that airs on Channel 21 at 5 pm attracted attention Nespral now is co-anchor of weekend editions of From its earliest days Channel 21 has played an active role in the Hispanic community Mario Carrera the station manager said Channel mission is enhance the life and economic well-being of Hispanks in the San Joaquin Valley This mission is accomplished with informational entertainment fnhicatkm1! programming and by being an active participant and promoter of community events and services There are nearly 691000 people of Hispanic origin in the viewing area which covers Kern Kings Tulare Fresno Madera Merced and Mariposa counties Combining the Fresno and Bakersfield television markets makes Channel service area No 8 among Hispanic TV markets nationwide Being the vehicle that links viewers with cultural arts or government agencies has been vital to the success Carrera said a doubt we be here without the flhnnnal accomplishments include: Bilingual education shows that are beamed into schools "Navidad en el Valle" an annual appeal since 1973 for cash and toyB for needy children Telethons that have provided earthquake relief in Guatemala California and Mexico and foe South Valley citrus workers who lost their jobs after a devastating freeze and Hispanic students The encouragement of Valley composers and performers through Channel participation in the OTI Song Festival for 15 years Promotion and financial support for parades festivals cultural arts events and aotial services The anniversary celebration a black-tie affair In the Fresno Metropolitan Museum will raise money for Arte Americas a nonprofit corporation that promotes Hispanic arts in Central California The London Tima GREATlMERIf A COMEDY HAS AIMED!" 111 I'M in t- IW A Guy Frank KCOMV LOS ANGELES Of The Great -Mm SHfia CBS RADIO NETWORK Davis a KDNL-TV ST LOUS COLUMBIA PICTURES NOW PLAYING iT £0 Irt J'tv-w THE BEST FILMS OF THE YEAR! -Ioi hart SfittL I BEIT 7ASSI0NATEJHEAR BUSS' SBRND II Mis by Potties locoits I I T7TT7TTT Singer Victor Lanza is following a family tradition His father Mario was a tenor with a big voice who starred on stage and screen from 1949 until his death in 1959 Now Victor also a tenor wil sing the songs that made Ns father famous at a benefit for Boys and Girls Towns of Italy on Saturday at the Hacienda Resort 2550 Clinton Ave The black-tie optional benefit begins at 6:30 Dinner starts at 730 pm Ilowed by a program at 8:30 pm and the show "Memories of Mario at 9 pm Donna Sadlicka also will sing Dancing will follow with music by The Statesmen Orchestra Tickets are $85 $65 for those under 21 Information: 432-2471 NO MSSEI OR DUCOUWTICttT AGCtmO FMTHS HWtttMHIT KE DMECTOff HR SN0W1MKS DEFINITE WINNER THAT- HITSK HEART FOR THEWHOLE Arijoanna langlield THE MOVIE MINUTE "Engrossing'The Pubuc Eyb' Features A Standout Joe Peso" -MrnMHKUMBSnWMNMIMI "'TmPubuc ErfbA PamMoys MB BBOKBOBm JMVMjf BBB ffAffffllMf uBB HM a MBBtffIBfV --P -4 WnBIBB BBB BBBOBBT -MWihr MM RADIO SBSBBBSmm BNStBff Mbrwflitlwbt? taaOMNMBICIINMOWIClMIICI iHcPueucEn'kACgmx "GutstMoommu' Direct from Moscow Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet and Company Ekaterina Maximova Vladimir Vasiliev One Only!
