newspaper As when a man bites a dog news when a dog graduates By BOB WELKOS City News Service Compton also had a total of 873 armed robberies 4305 burglaries and 98 rapes during 1972 It is this specter of violent crime that has caused the 200-member Compton Police Officers Association (CPOA) to throw its entire support to Mrs Davis to the point of even walking door-to-door in each precinct and providing her protection during off-duty hours According to Detective Saul Lankster president of the CPOA the only issue that defeated Dollarhide was his inability to do anything about crime in Compton According to Mayor Dollarhide however the mayor has no power to stop crime let alone reduce it major issue here is crime and all the others ars related to Lankster said a nutshell the police officers feel that we look bad in Compton because of the crime cpnditions here and the ineffectiveness of the current administration to deal with he added are no grocery shopping facilities at all in political star seemed on the ascent Surrounded by armed guards on a June night in 1969 Dollarhide told his supporters he would try and do the best job possible for all the people of Compton But that was four years ago Tuesday night when results of municipal election were tabulated Dollarhide plated a distant second to City Clerk Doris Davis Mrs Davis received 4 votes to 2963 This time it was Mrs Davis who ringed by armed off-duty Compton policemen told her supporters to campaign even harder for her in the June 5 runoff against Dollarhide It looks now as if the runoff campaigns of both Mrs Davis and Mayor Dollarhide will no matter what the result deeply divide a community already divided if not conquered If the story has a beginning it is on the streets of Compton Last year Compton had 46 murders which in a city of about 80000 ranked first per capita in the DOUGLAS DOLLARHIDE DORIS DAVIS (Cont on Page B-4 Col 1) -i -X 5 i Press-Telegram FRIDAY MAY 4 1973-SEC PAGE 1 A -r s-v- fillip
